The Xbox Showcase on 11 June gave fans a deeper look at Cyberpunk 2077‘s upcoming DLC Phantom Liberty. The new expansion introduces a side-plot to the main game centring around the conflicts in Night City’s Dogtown. From here, V joins up with the New United States of America and Idris Elba’s Solomon Reed. The new content is a huge addition to the game and fans are asking “is Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty a free expansion?”

Thus far, additional content for the game has come in the form of free updates. However, Phantom Liberty is so much more than a simple update with bug fixes and some cosmetic items. Instead, it adds in a whole new playable story while simultaneously overhauling much of the existing experience. Kotaku’s Kenneth Shepard explained, “Phantom Liberty seemed to approximate the game we thought we were getting, the one promised by all the hype and trailers before release.”

Phantom Liberty has been described as being similar in scope to The Witcher 3‘s revered Blood and Wine DLC. And that wasn’t free. So, it makes sense that the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 expansion will also come at a reasonable cost.

So, is Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty a free expansion and, if not, how much does it cost?

The DLC is now up for pre-order on the PlayStation Store. Fans will have to shell-out considerably more for Phantom Liberty than The Witcher 3‘s two expansions which cost just £8/$10 and £12/$15.

The expansion is set to launch on 26 September, 2023. It takes place before the end of the main game and introduces a whole new side-story for players to get stuck into. Along with that, it also overhauls many of the game’s existing systems to deliver an all-new Cyberpunk 2077 experience.

On top of the main storyline, Phantom Liberty also includes a number of different side quests and activities. Consequently, it is shaping up to be well worth the £25 price-tag. Of course, this is Cyberpunk 2077 we’re talking about – and it’s best not to get hopes too high after its disastrous launch back in 2020. Nevertheless, Phantom Liberty looks very promising and should end up being well worth the asking price.
