With all the rumours and discussion surrounding every new Call of Duty, it can be difficult to tell fact from fiction. When it comes to 2023’s Modern Warfare 3, much speculation has focussed on whether the game will be an updated version of 2022’s game. Furthermore, there has even been some suggestion that Modern Warfare 3 will be free.

Following the release of Modern Warfare 2, it was widely reported that 2023 would be the first year since 2004 that publisher Activision skipped the release of a new Call of Duty game.

Attention then turned to what Activision might do instead. Before long, rumours spread indicating that new content would be released for Modern Warfare 2. Supposedly, the significant update would feature new campaign missions and fresh content for multiplayer and Warzone.

In turn, this generated some speculation that Modern Warfare 3 would, in fact, be released for free in 2023. If this were to be the case, it would be a dramatic and unexpected departure from franchise’s status quo.

Is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 free?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will not be free. Activision has confirmed it is a “premium release”.

The game, scheduled to launch on 10th November 2023, will feature its own campaign, multiplayer, co-operative, and Zombies modes.

In an official Call of Duty blog published on 16th August, Activision described Modern Warfare 3 as a “premium annual game experience”. This means players will have to purchase Modern Warfare 3 if they want to play it.

Unless confirmed otherwise, fans can expect the game to cost $69.99/£69.99 just like last year’s Call of Duty title.

Despite being a new and separate game, Modern Warfare 3 will feature ‘Carry Forward’. This will allow players to “continue to enjoy player inventory and weapon progression from last year’s Modern Warfare II“.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be formally unveiled during the limited-time Warzone reveal event on 17th August 2023.
