Amnesia: The Bunker is the latest instalment in the long-running and popular survival horror series. Set during World War I, players control Henri Clement. Henri is a French soldier who finds himself in a terrifying underground bunker where he is being pursued by a monstrous creature. But how does The Bunker connect to previous instalments? And is Amnesia: The Bunker a sequel to other games in the series?
For anyone new to the series, exactly how the latest game fits in to series lore will be a big question. It’s also worth noting that each game features a different setting. For example, The Dark Descent was set in Prussia in 1839. Meanwhile, A Machine for Pigs took place in London in 1899 and Rebirth was set in Algeria in 1937.
With The Bunker shifting to World War I (1916 to be precise), how do the games’ plots fit together, what do you need to know about the series’ narrative, and is Amnesia: The Bunker a sequel or prequel to the earlier titles?
Is Amnesia: The Bunker a sequel or prequel?
The Amnesia games are not directly connected to each other, but they do contain references to the other games in the series. Therefore, the games after Amnesia: The Dark Descent are considered to be indirect sequels. Similarly, Amnesia: The Bunker is neither a direct sequel nor direct prequel to any of the other Amnesia games.
In Amnesia: The Bunker, players can look forward to piecing together a spooky mystery surrounding the eponymous facility, as well as the true reasons behind Henri’s presence there.
Resources are scarce and avoiding a photosensitive monster called “the Beast” is your primary objective. Every action you take could attract the creature so you need to exercise extreme caution while exploring.
The Bunker also features a semi-open world, where things can change depending on your actions and choices. According to the game’s creative lead Fredrik Olsson, this has all been done to give players a “higher sense of agency”, with the focus being on “making it a really scary experience.”
Amnesia: The Bunker launches on 6th June 2023 for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
