The season finale of HBO’s The Last of Us was an emotional and gut-wrenching rollercoaster. For those new to TLOU, the horrific events of the final episode were no doubt shocking. Meanwhile, it will have gone almost entirely as expected for longtime fans (and that’s a good thing). But some may have been wondering if a certain controversial character made an appearance. Is Abby in The Last of Us season finale? Well, the answer to that question isn’t quite as straightforward as you might think.
HBO has done an incredible job of adapting the beloved 2013 video game into a television show. The Last of Us has received rave reviews from critics and fans alike.
While many elements are practically identical to the game, there have been some changes made. Arguably, they’ve all been for the betterment of The Last of Us in this new format.
In the finale, Joel and Ellie arrived at the hospital controlled by the Fireflies in Salt Lake City. Ellie is quickly taken into surgery so development of a cure for the Cordyceps brain infection can begin.
An enraged Joel kills the Fireflies and head surgeon just as he did in the game. He then flees with Ellie.
Unbeknown to Joel, the head surgeon was, in fact, Jerry Anderson. Jerry had a daughter named Abby who swears to take revenge against Joel for killing her father.
In The Last of Us Part II video game, Abby brutally murders Joel in retaliation. It’s also established that Abby was present in Salt Lake City at the time of Joel’s rampage. But did the character make an appearance in the season finale, perhaps to tease her role in season two?
Is Abby in The Last of Us season finale?
Is Abby in The Last of Us season finale? The Abby Anderson character does not appear in the final episode of season one. However, a special (and easily missed) easter egg meant she was there in spirit. Abby voice actor Laura Bailey played one of the surgeons who was about to operate on Ellie.
The surgeons were spared by Joel after they freed Ellie, so it’s possible that Laura Bailey’s character could make an appearance in future episodes of The Last of Us.
After Joel killed Jerry Anderson, the camera focused on his dead body for a moment. And even though his true identity wasn’t established, this was likely included to foreshadow the events of season two.
Of course, we don’t yet know exactly how Abby will fit into season two of HBO’s The Last of Us. Will her role be the same as it was in Part II? We’ll just have to wait and see.
