The Insidious franchise was launched in 2010 with its first movie, establishing itself as a popular horror series. Since then, it has expanded with two prequels and two sequels. This series has consistently captivated horror enthusiasts, and its newest installment, Insidious: The Red Door, is no exception, making an impressive impact at the box office.
In the initial 2010 film, the Lambert family, comprised of Josh (Patrick Wilson), Renai (Rose Byrne), and their three children, move into a new house. They soon discover that their son, Dalton (Ty Simpkins), possesses the extraordinary ability to astral project.
Unfortunately, Dalton becomes trapped in a dimension known as “The Further,” where malevolent entities relentlessly seek to possess his body. The parents seek the assistance of paranormal investigator Elise Rainier to rescue Dalton from The Further. Throughout their journey, they confront terrifying encounters and face a dark demonic spirit. Ultimately, they succeed in bringing Dalton back, but they learn that a malevolent entity has latched onto his father’s soul.
“The Further” is a dimension that exists between Earth, Heaven, and Hell. It serves as a dwelling place for tormented spirits of the deceased who yearn for one thing above all else: life. Although vast and mostly desolate, The Further bears an eerie resemblance to the real world.
In the latest instalment, Insidious: The Red Door, Dalton, now a college student, separates from his family to pursue studies at an art school following his grandmother’s passing. However, he finds himself plagued by memories from his forgotten past and haunted by demons seeping through from The Further.
Elise Rainier appears in The Red Door but only as a ghost. So, what happened to her?
What happened to Elise Rainier in Insidious?
Elise Rainier is one of the main protagonists in the Insidious series and she is portrayed by actress Lin Shaye.
Elise is a gifted psychic medium and paranormal investigator known for her experience in fighting evil spirits. She possesses a deep understanding of the supernatural realm, known as “The Further”. She was a friend of Josh Lambert’s mother, Lorraine, and helped him to combat a demonic entity as a child. Elise later returns to help Josh and his family in the first Insidious movie.
So, what happened to Elise Rainier in Insidious? While Elise appears in Insidious: The Red Door and all other movies in the series, the character was actually murdered at the end of the first film.
Consequently, she is only seen alive in the prequel movies, and in flashbacks, old recordings/photos and as a spirit in all chronologically subsequent films.
At the end of the first Insidious, Elise Rainier is murdered by Josh Lambert after he is possessed by the Bride in Black. The Bride (also known as Parker Crane), took over Josh’s body while he was in The Further and proceeds to strangle Elise when she realises he is possessed.
