This Baldur’s Gate 3 guide explains how to fix the Slack Skinned Head dialogue/interaction bug causing players to get stuck.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is getting lots of well-deserved praise. After taking the gaming world by surprise, hordes of players are flocking to the new fantasy RPG following it’s long-awaited full release. It’s breaking records on Steam and is considered a game of the year contender. But it isn’t without its faults.

Across the internet, players are criticising the game for numerous bugs, glitches and performance issues they are encountering. While these problems aren’t enough to spoil the game, they certainly dampen the experience. In certain parts of BG3, they also risk halting or slowing player progress and causing you to miss key story beats.

One such example of this is a bug players are experiencing with the Slack Skinned Head. The mysterious head can be found in the Necrotic Laboratory in Mind Flayer Colony.

According to Balthazar’s Notes found near the Slack Skinned Head, it is actually the result of a scientific experiment. Referred to in the notes as a “device”, “minds” can be inserted into it via the Mind-Archive Interface and communicated with.

Players can insert three minds into the Slack Skinned Head. They are the Willing Mind, True Mind, and Waking Mind. However, some players are encountering an issue preventing them from communicating with the head entirely. When they try to talk to it, their character becomes stuck and the game must be reloaded to resume playing.

But this doesn’t actually solve the problem as players will want to hear what the head has to say. So, how do you fix the bug?

This is how to fix the Slack Skinned Head bug in Baldur’s Gate 3:

To fix the Slack Skinned Head bug, quit the game and restart it using DirectX 11 instead of Vulkan.

To switch to DirectX 11, open the Baldur’s Gate 3 launcher. Underneath the large ‘Play’ button are two check boxes – one for DirectX11 and one for Vulkan. Tick DirectX 11 and click ‘Play’.

Restart the game using DirectX 11.

This should allow you to talk to the head without any further issues.

The exact cause of the bug is unknown, however players will miss some interesting dialogue if they do not fix the issue.

Given how quick the fix is to do, we think it is well worth doing just to see what the Slack Skinned Head has to say. Hopefully this bug will be properly patched soon, but, until then, this workaround does the job.

Your solution doesn’t work. I expect it was likely just luck that allow you to succeed. Switching to dx10 hangs as well.
