Yes, you read that right. Someone has turned the cute adventure game Stray into the stuff of nightmares by creating a truly horrific mod.
The game has been a surprise hit for developer BlueTwelve Studio and publisher Annapurna Interactive. Since its release on July 19th, gamers have been getting stuck into the kitty-centric title.
And it has generated lots of conversation and excitement on social media. Despite this, the fact remains that Stray isn’t exactly packed full of content.
As a result, players are taking things into their own hands. Mods are appearing online for the game and things are getting pretty weird.
Nexus Mods user sir_galahad172 has created a surprise Stray and GTA San Andreas mash-up. At this point, you’re probably thinking it sounds like a dream crossover.
But be warned. sir_galahad172 was clearly so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should. And they definitely shouldn’t have.
The horrific Stray mod you never asked for
The modder has replaced Stray‘s pro-cat-onist with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas main character CJ. So, did they just swap the character models? No.
CJ’s body has been warped into the shape of a cat’s. His body is now completely out of proportion, with stretch limbs, a perfectly straight back, and a big, bobble head.
Of course, this had to be done to enable CJ to move like the in-game cat. Which actually makes things even creepier.
Unsurprisingly, the mod is proving quite popular. As of writing, it’s been downloaded 290 times and viewed almost 5,500 times.
If you’re interested – which I’m sure you are, you sicko – you can check out the mod at this link. Simply follow the steps provided to install it on PC.
It’s worth noting, however, that the mod does break the other cats in the game’s intro. sir_galahad172 explains “the 3 cats in the beginning are broken as [they] all share 1 cat model”.
Thankfully, “the player cat does work normally throughout the game.”
How have players reacted?
As you can imagine, players have reacted strongly to the mod. But everyone seems to be in on the joke.
One user said in the Nexus Mods comment section: “I wish that you could see my jaw sitting on the floor right now”.
Another appeared conflicted: “I played like this for a few minutes and I hate it but I’m considering playing the whole game like this. Good job. More funny mods pls.”
A third downloader had an interesting suggestion for another unusual Stray mod; “How about a Xenomorph Cat?”, they asked.
Whatever modders have in store for Stray in the future, we’re both intrigued and terrified to see what they come up with.
