The Merlin Trials were created by the legendary wizard who was himself a student at Hogwarts.
All the trials can be found outside in the area around the school. One of them is located in the northern part of the South Hogwarts Region.

Each Merlin Trial begins in the same way: finding a spiral plate embedded in the ground.
After using Mallowsweet to activate the trial, you can start to solve it.
However, each trial requires a different solution. This Merlin Trial features balls on the top of pillars.
This is how to solve the northern South Hogwarts Region Merlin Trial in Hogwarts Legacy. Use Accio to smash the balls on top of the pillars in the surrounding area. They are all close by. To find them, carefully examine the area. Some are on top of nearby rocks or just down the hill. There are nine to destroy in total.
Once each ball has been destroyed, the Merlin Trial will be complete.
