Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Shams Jorjani has confirmed that Helldivers 2 will not receive a story mode as part of a future update.
A Helldivers 2 player asked Jorjani on X if the company can “create a story mode for coop? With epic moments and tragic scenes”. Jorjani bluntly replied: “Not happening. Sorry bro. That’s like building an entirely new game.”
Helldivers 2, which took the gaming world by surprise when in launched in February 2024, has been widely praised for its excellently chaotic co-op experience. It is PlayStation’s fastest selling game ever and has remained steadily popular in the months since its explosive debut.
Its story focuses on humanity’s battle for survival and galactic territory against the Terminids and Automatons. Featuring minimal cutscenes, the plot of Helldivers 2 is told predominantly through overarching quests (known as Orders) as well as documents, messages, and logs players can find during missions.
While there hasn’t been much demand for a dedicated story mode in Helldivers 2, it isn’t surprising that some players want one to help flesh out the universe.
After all, the game, its developer Arrowhead and publisher Sony have faced criticism despite its incredible success. First, players struggled to access Helldivers 2 due to overwhelming and unexpected demand on its servers. Then Sony decided to force PC players to make a PSN account if they wanted to continue playing.
Both matters have since been resolved and Arrowhead continue to release patches with the aim of continually improving the experience. There has also been endless discussion online about possible new content for Helldivers 2, although the game is yet to receive a significant content update.
However, what we now know for certain is that any future updates won’t include a story mode for Helldivers 2.
