It has been a difficult week for Helldivers 2 players on PC. First, Sony announced that by 4 June all players must link their Steam accounts with a PlayStation Network account to keep playing. And now, the ability to purchase Helldivers 2 in 177 non-PSN countries has been removed.
Of course, if you’re playing the game on PS5 then you won’t care. But for players on PC, this has snowballed into an issue that, as of writing, has earned Helldivers 2 tens of thousands of negative reviews on Steam.
I mean, the whole situation is clearly an absolute mess. Linking accounts to a publisher’s network is nothing new. But the implementation of such a feature was delayed with Helldivers 2 due to technical issues. As a result, PC players were able to purchase and enjoy the game without a PSN account. Yet, they are now being forced to create an account for a service that many don’t want or face losing access to a game they already own.
If you live in one of the 177 non-PSN countries, well, you’re completely out of luck. The fact you purchased and played the game apparently means nothing. Without a PSN account, you won’t be able to play. And without some kind of workaround from Sony, there’s nowhere to turn.
One confused player wrote to the CEO of Arrowhead, Johan Pilestedt, on X and asked what they should do with PlayStation Network being unavailable in their country. “I don’t know,” replied a seemingly defeated Pilestedt.
As you’d expect, players are furious. And it’s not just those who have lost access to the game. Some people simply don’t want to sign up to yet another platform.
However, there is some good news. If you don’t want to – or can’t – play the game anymore, it appears that Steam are approving full refunds.
So, as always, if you’re disappointed at these developments, it’s time to vote with your wallet and try to get your money back.
