Grand Theft Auto VI has been revealed at last. Its jaw-dropping debut trailer has set the internet on fire and racked up an incredible 120 million views already. But a surprising amount of attention has turned to the game’s official artwork and something dubbed the “GTA 6 seagull theory”.
If there’s one thing the GTA fanbase is known for, it’s outlandish theories. A while back, people were questioning whether GTA 6‘s reveal was related to phases of the moon. Similarly, over the last 10 years, fans have been religiously dissecting all of Rockstar Games’ social media posts for clues about the next Grand Theft Auto.
Now, some fans are wondering if obscure hints about the plot of GTA 6 are being inserted into the game’s marketing. And the seagull theory is just one of them.
So, what is it and what does it mean? Having deep-dived into the seagull theory, allow us to explain what it’s all about.
GTA 6 seagull theory explained
The seagull theory focuses on official artworks for GTA 5 and GTA 6. The GTA 5 artwork in question features main characters Michael, Franklin and Trevor looking inside the trunk of a car. Meanwhile, the GTA 6 artwork shows protagonists Lucia and her partner (believed to be called Jason) sat on the hood of a car. Check out both images below.
But what’s all the fuss about? Well, in the background of these images are some seagulls. The GTA 5 artwork features a seagull flying through the sky in between the heads of Michael and Franklin. Conversely, the GTA 6 image includes three seagulls flying away to the left of Lucia’s head.
Some fans believe these have been included as a reference to former GTA protagonists. It has been suggested the seagull in the GTA 5 artwork represents GTA 4‘s Niko Bellic leaving the series. Therefore, GTA 6‘s seagulls represent the end of Michael, Franklin and Trevor’s journey in Grand Theft Auto.
Whether this is true and the seagulls have, in fact, been used to reference past characters is unknown and it’s unlikely Rockstar Games will comment on it. However, it’s fun to be sentimental about characters of old and believe they still have a place in the marketing of Rockstar’s newer games.
