Nothing in life is as certain as death and taxes. Except, perhaps, the endless GTA 6 speculation cycle. More than a year and a half since Rockstar officially confirmed the long-awaited sequel, no legitimate news has arrived. And fans are getting desperate for a GTA 6 trailer.
In September 2022, the company suffered a devastating network intrusion that led to the unauthorised release of early development footage of GTA 6. Brief clips of the game were widely shared and these are, to date, the only glimpses fans have had.
But that hasn’t stopped people across social media from ceaselessly speculating about GTA 6‘s announcement. Earlier this month, fans thought they’d uncovered its release date. There are also far-fetched theories about phases of the moon and near-constant hunts for clues in Rockstar’s social media posts.
According to fans, all signs point to October 2023. And despite numerous ‘guaranteed’ reveal dates passing by with no news, hopeful social media users are sure Rockstar is gearing up to announce the game on either 25th or 26th October.
25th October 2023 marks ten years since the announcement of GTA V, after all. To make matters worse, a supposed gameplay trailer has been ‘leaked’ online that apparently shows official footage of Grand Theft Auto VI in action.
Is the GTA 6 gameplay trailer real?
The GTA 6 trailer being shared on social media is not real. Echoing the first GTA V trailer, it uses footage from heavily-modded versions of that game as well as clips and assets from other games.
A dead giveaway is the inclusion of licensed vehicles in the trailer, such as a BMW. Grand Theft Auto has never featured real-life cars, so this immediately proves the trailer is fake.
It also includes footage from Dead Island 2 and a mock Grand Theft Auto VI logo that has been circulating online for years.
While the trailer may be fake, what does this mean for an official announcement? Well, the ten-year anniversary of GTA V would certainly be a fitting occasion. However, it is unlikely and there is no indication an announcement is coming any time soon.
As disappointing as this may be, fans would be better served by simply forgetting about GTA 6 until Rockstar shares something official. No amount of theorising and searching for clues will provide a meaningful answer. The announcement will come when Rockstar is ready to make it – whether that’s tomorrow or a year from now.
