News dropped last week that Rockstar Games is shifting its focus to GTA 6. This was a relief to some fans, but it came at a cost. Rumoured GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption remasters were scrapped.
Now it appears another planned game has been cancelled. And this one may come as a significant disappointment.
The latest title to be shelved is a Red Dead Redemption 2 port for current-gen consoles. That’s right – PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions were apparently planned. But now they’re off the table to make way for GTA 6.
Red Dead Redemption 2 PS5 and Xbox Series X versions scrapped
The report comes from reliable Rockstar insider Tez2. “I guess it’s safe to say that Red Dead Redemption II will never get a PS5/Xbox Series S/X release either?”, someone asked.
Tez2 shared news of the cancellation in response:
“Yes. I’ve heard about those a long time ago. As well as their plan to come up with an Enhanced Rockstar Editor. All cancelled/halted now.”

It’s currently unclear when or for how long the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S versions were in development. However, it’s something fans of the critically-acclaimed game have been asking for since current-gen consoles were released.
This news also follows Rockstar’s recent announcement that it will no longer provide major content updates for Red Dead Online. The company said:
“… we plan to build upon existing modes and add new Telegram Missions this year, rather than delivering major themed content updates like in previous years“, and also noted that it’s “moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series“.
Fans have long complained that Rockstar neglect Red Dead Online in favour of GTA Online. And the apparent scrapping of new RDR2 versions suggests it considers Grand Theft Auto as more important than Red Dead overall.
GTA 6 is Rockstar’s top priority
Perhaps the best thing to come out of this is the news that Rockstar are now taking GTA 6‘s development very seriously.
“[We understand] more than ever the need to exceed players’ expectations and for this next entry to be the best it can possibly be“
Rockstar Games
This means that while we likely won’t be seeing much from Rockstar for a while. But at least we know things are progressing well with GTA 6.
As for Red Dead Redemption – with no information relating to a third instalment – it’s unclear exactly what Rockstar will do with the franchise going forward.
There’s certainly a desire for more. But we’ve waited nine years for GTA 6 already – so Red Dead Redemption III is probably a long, long way away.
