September marks 8 years since the original PS3 and Xbox 360 release of Grand Theft Auto 5. We’re now two generations removed from those consoles and GTA 5 PS5 is right around the corner. While it may not be the long-awaited GTA 6, GTA 5 for PS5 and Xbox Series X is likely to be as popular as ever. And we are interested to get our hands on it when it comes out in November.

GTA 5 for PlayStation 5 will represent a huge step forward for Rockstar’s long-running series. It will be their first game for next-gen consoles and it might just give fans a glimpse of what GTA 6 could look like on the new hardware. But what enhancements can fans expect in GTA 5 PS5 and Xbox Series X? Read on to find out.

Release Date

Grand Theft Auto 5 will arrive on Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X on November 11th, 2021.

Will GTA 5 PS5 be a free upgrade?

Rockstar are yet to confirm if Grand Theft Auto 5 for PS5 and Xbox Series X will be a free upgrade for those who already own the game on older consoles.

Given the fact GTA 5 for PS4 wasn’t a free upgrade for those who owned it on PS3, it’s doubtful the PS5 version will be. That means it will be either a paid upgrade to those who own it already or a stand-alone purchase. Again, if history is anything to go by, the next-gen GTA 5 will be a stand-alone purchase.

Enhancements

Rockstar have held back on sharing all the juicy details about GTA 5 for PS5. However, they have explained that fans can expect an improved experience over previous versions of the game.

“The new generation versions of GTA 5 will feature a range of technical improvements, visual upgrades and performance enhancements to take full advantage of the latest hardware, making the game more beautiful and more responsive than ever,” Rockstar said.

From this it is logical to deduce that GTA 5 will see similar visual and performance improvements to other older games that’ve received the next-gen upgrade treatment. That means 4K visuals and smooth 60FPS performance. Luckily for us, a July update on the German PlayStation Blog appears to confirm as much:

“You have never seen the criminal metropolis Los Santos so beautiful when the skyline shines thanks to a bold graphic update in crisp 4K resolution and you make the city extremely smooth and unsafe thanks to a smooth 60 FPS.” [Auto-translation from German]

Is there a difference between GTA 5 for PS5 and Xbox Series X?

With details around the next-gen enhancements for GTA 5 being so scarce, we can’t say for certain if it will differ between consoles. We’d like to think it won’t thanks to the hardware capabilities of both consoles but it’s possible one might optimise the game better than the other.

When further details are revealed about Grand Theft Auto 5‘s next-gen enhancements, we’ll be sure to provide them right here. Make sure you bookmark this page and check back so you’re in the know!
