Grand Theft Auto V is one of the most successful video games ever made. Since its initial launch in 2013, it has sold over 160 million copies and generated $6 billion in revenue. Even nine years later, fans are still pumping a tremendous amount of time into the game.

You’d suspect that most fans know everything there is to know about GTA 5. But that’s not the case. Not only are players continually discovering new and interesting things about it, but there’s some older facts that aren’t widely known.

So, here’s 5 cool pieces of GTA 5 trivia you probably don’t know…

GTA 5 Trivia: 5 Incredible Facts About GTA 5

5. GTA 5 was nearly ported to the Wii U

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy released back in November 2021 for the Nintendo Switch. But it wasn’t the first game from the series that Rockstar considered bringing to a flagship Nintendo console.

Back in a November 2012 interview with IGN, Rockstar’s Dan Houser said, “Everything else is up for consideration. That’s all I can give you”, in response to a question asking about bringing GTA 5 to Nintendo’s Wii U. But that’s not all. Unseen64’s Liam Robertson, who specialises in uncovering unreleased games, tweeted the following back in 2015: “Received a tip a while back that GTA was prototyped for Wii U briefly. A reliable source, who will probably have me killed for saying this.”

Unfortunately for Wii U owners (of which there weren’t many), the port was cancelled due to the console’s weak sales. Nonetheless, it’s still a surprising piece of GTA 5 trivia.

4. GTA 5’s script was 3,500 pages long

Grand Theft Auto V is a huge game with a deep narrative and fascinating characters. As a result, it has a mindbogglingly large script that spans 3,500 pages!

Voice actor Ned Luke, who portrays Michael Townley in GTA 5, revealed the tidbit during IGN’s Comic Con panel back in 2014. He said, “It’s a brilliant script. Dan [Houser] and Rupert [Humphries], the writers, are prolific. You have to understand, this is a 3500 page script, it’s unbelievable is what it is. They’re up there till their fingers are bleeding.”

3. GTA 5 contains an Easter egg that references both GTA 4 and Lost

GTA 5 is full of cool Easter eggs for fans to discover. However, this one not only makes reference to one of the series’ most famous lines – but also the TV series Lost.

Just east of the game’s rock quarry, players can find an underwater hatch that closely resembles a similar hatch from Lost. It’s far out and is deep under the sea making it pretty difficult to get to without the proper gear. However, when you do get close, a mysterious banging sound can be heard. This banging is actually morse code that translates to “Hey, you never call, how d’you fancy going bowling?”, in reference to Roman Bellic from Grand Theft Auto IV.

2. GTA 5’s map is bigger than GTA 4, Red Dead Redemption and GTA: San Andreas combined

This is perhaps the most staggering piece of GTA 5 trivia.

As mentioned, Grand Theft Auto V is a massive game. But you may not have realised just how big it actually is when you played it.

If you took the three maps from GTA 4, Red Dead Redemption, and GTA San Andreas, they would fit inside of GTA 5‘s. That’s right, GTA 5‘s map is bigger than all three of those games combined! Who knows how big the world of GTA 6 will be…

1. GTA 5 made over $800 million in one day

We all know that GTA 5 was a huge success for Rockstar. If it wasn’t, they wouldn’t have supported it for all these years. But it may surprise you to know that it made $800 million in its first day on sale!

The hype around GTA 5‘s launch was tremendous and that translated into record breaking sales for Rockstar. All this means Grand Theft Auto V is considered to be one of the most successful entertainment products of all time – and that’s difficult to dispute with figures like this.

In a press release at the time, Rockstar said:

“Grand Theft Auto V” delivered the highest first day retail sales of any title in the history of the Company and the “Grand Theft Auto” series.

Launched on September 17 […] the title has already received widespread critical acclaim and achieved first day sell-through of more than $800 million worldwide, excluding the upcoming launch in Japan and Brazil, according to company estimates.”
