This God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla guide explains how to defeat Alva.
God of War Ragnarok‘s new DLC – Valhalla – is a pleasant surprise. It isn’t just some minor update. It provides fresh story content contained within a brand new game mode.
As Kratos, players travel to Valhalla with Mimir. When they arrive, the pair must take on a series of brutal combat challenges that blend the GoW gameplay we know and love with roguelike elements. This involves repeating similar encounters but learning the best way to approach them.
When players approach the mid-point of a run, they enter a boss arena. Inside the arena can be any one of an assortment of bosses. As you might expect, some are much harder than others. One of the toughest – in my opinion, at least – is Alva.
Alva is powerful, relentless, and fast. They wield two blades and levitate above the ground, enabling them to dodge rapidly. Alva also benefits from having attacks that cover close, mid and long ranges. This makes it somewhat challenging to predict what the creature will do next.
So, how do you defeat Alva in God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla?

Defeating Alva in Valhalla requires you to execute well-timed dodges and parries. It is also recommended that you keep your distance as much as possible. For that reason, using the Leviathan Axe and Draupnir Spear’s ranged attacks is the best option for dealing consistent incremental damage.
Alva is lethal at close range and will unleash a barrage of slashes. The only way to escape these is to parry (where possible) or roll to the side.
At the mid-range, Alva is likely to combine their blades and launch them like a boomerang. This attack is parry-able and will stun Alva if executed correctly. Use this window to get up close and deal damage. It’s also worth noting that these attacks cannot reach you if you stand far enough away. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you stay back if you expect Alva is about to throw their blades.
One of Alva’s unblockable attacks involves the creature crossing its blades and firing an X-shaped projectile at you. Thankfully, this is relatively simple to dodge by rolling to the left or right.
Alva’s AOE attack offers a small window for you to interrupt it while it powers up. While the blue ring is visible, sprint to Alva and use your shield attack. If you miss this opportunity, the only way to avoid the attack by rolling at the last possible second.
Patience is key with Alva – do not rush to deal as much damage as possible as quickly as you can. Take your time, monitor their attacks, and keep your distance. And be sure to strike when an opening presents itself.
