George R. R. Martin, the acclaimed author behind the A Song of Ice and Fire novels which were adapted into the Game of Thrones TV series, has hinted that an Elden Ring movie is in the works in a cryptic blog post.

For those who weren’t aware, GRRM “did the worldbuilding” for Elden Ring and helped Hidetaka Miyazaki and the team at FromSoftware realise the game’s surreal fantasy world, The Lands Between.

Martin, a prolific blogger, shared a new post on 29 June in which he talked about winning the SFWA (Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association) Nebula Award for Game Writing for his work on Elden Ring.

After thanking the SFWA and paying tribute to FromSoftware for making, in his words, “the best-selling (and best) game in the world for 2022”, Martin addressed the rumours of an Elden Ring feature film or TV series.

“Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on ELDEN RING… I have nothing to say. Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?” wrote Martin.

If GRRM intended to add fuel to the fire, he’s certainly done that with this post.

As for where the rumours came from, Hidetaka Miyazaki started the mill turning in an interview with The Guardian last week. “I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example. But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure,” said the acclaimed video game director.

George Martin’s involvement in such a project would make sense. He was previously involved with the Game of Thrones TV series, writing the script for four episodes, and is a creator and executive producer on its prequel series, House of the Dragon. Clearly, Martin likes to have a hand in adaptions of the worlds he has created.

As for when an Elden Ring movie or TV adaption might arrive, it’s anyone’s guess without an official announcement. It’s quite obvious that, at the very least, conversations about such a project are being had. Whether or not it ever materialises remains to be seen. But who wouldn’t love to see The Lands Between on the big screen?
