One of the best things about getting a new video game console is unboxing it. A console’s box is the first thing a player sees when they buy it. And boxes help set expectations for many exciting hours to come. The PS5 box is widely recognised thanks to its eye-catching yet minimalist design featuring the logo, console, and controller against a white background.
But one gamer recently noticed a distinctive ‘error’ on a new PlayStation 5 box. Reddit user u/frigginright spotted the printing mistake after their girlfriend purchased one.
Posting to the r/playstation subreddit, they shared a picture of two PS5 boxes next to each other. One box was normal and featured a PlayStation 5 console and DualSense controller. However, the other box wasn’t quite right. “I just noticed this PS5 box has the top bit of a second PS5 instead of a picture of the controller”, they wrote.
u/frigginright elaborated: “my PS5 box is from Nov 2021 and has the controller as usual but my girlfriend just bought one last week and I noticed something was off about the box. I pulled my box out of the closet and sure enough it was different.”
Other Reddit users speculated that the suspected printing error might actually make the box incredibly valuable. u/PRX_1965 said: “List it for 10x the price and watch someone actually buy it.” u/ John-1993W commented: “This is the kind of s**t that will sells [sic] for thousands”.
Another user concurred, adding: “… it’s probably a rare error and made it through QC, it could be valuable in the future.”
However, not everyone agreed. According to u/ki700, the mistake is actually a regular occurrence: “I work in retail. This isn’t rare. All the PS5 boxes were printed like this starting several months ago. Why did it happen? No idea. But it’s very common.”
One user even stated they own a box just like it. “I bought my PS5 on March 9th and I got the same box, I’m in Canada.”, said u/pm_junkie.
The exact reason for the error – if it is, in fact, an error – is unclear. However, it seems there are other PlayStation 5 boxes out there that feature the same ‘mistake’. With that being said, it’s still interesting to learn that there are two versions of the PlayStation 5 box out there.
