There are few internet memes spookier than “The Backrooms”. It first arose as a creepypasta on 4chan back in 2019. It has since grown into something of an internet phenomenon. The Backrooms has spawned short films, indie video games and mods, and its own complex lore. It’s even being adapted into a movie and helped inspire popular television show Severance. But with the launch of Unreal Editor For Fortnite (UEFN), Fortnite players can now experience an eerie Backrooms Fortnite mini-game that takes things to a terrifying new level.

UEFN – otherwise known as Creative 2.0 – provides Fortnite creators with greater control and creative liberty than ever thanks to the power of Unreal Engine 5.

Creators have already gotten to work on a variety of excellent maps in Creative 2.0. And many have gone viral on social media, including one by creator @totallynotwill_. They launched their very own map based on the Backrooms on 26 March 2023 and it’s garnering significant interest from horror-hungry Fortnite players. It was built using UEFN and is well worth checking out.

Players are free to navigate through the insanity-inducing mazes. Of course, the threat of spooky entities is ever-present and you can expect chilling jump scares while you explore.

Now is the perfect time to experience the Backrooms for yourself, too. That’s because a film based on the meme is right around the corner.

After 16-year-old YouTuber Kane Pixels created an acclaimed short-film (which has amassed 46 million views at the time of writing), he was hired by A24 to direct a feature-length version.

So, jump into the Fortnite Creative 2.0 version now created by @totallynotwill_ to see what all the fuss is about. But try not to noclip out of reality in the process.
