Forspoken Reviews Are In – And It Doesn’t Look Good

Forspoken is the first major gaming launch of 2023 but things aren’t off to a great start. After a lot of speculation about how it would fare on release, early reviews have decided that the game is a lacklustre mixed bag.

It’s no secret that many publications didn’t get early review codes for Forspoken. Some, like us, didn’t even hear from Square Enix. And that means many reviews will be out later than usual.

Of course, this is a big red flag. Any publisher that has confidence in a game’s quality will gladly hand out review codes as an effective marketing strategy. But that wasn’t the case here and it made people suspicous.

Nevertheless, Forspoken launches tomorrow and what reviews there are don’t tell a great story.

Currently, Forspoken sits at a decidedly average 68/100 on Metacritic based on 59 critic reviews. Some publications have even given scores as low as 4 out of 10.

Perhaps most surprising, though, is just how varied some of the scores are. The highest is from Gaming Nexus, who scored it an impressive 9.5 out of 10.

These hugely varied Forspoken reviews indicate that the game truly is a mixed bag. Evidently, some will love it and some will hate it. But that isn’t a recipe for success.

Forspoken follows protagonist Frey Holland, a girl from New York City, who becomes stranded in the fantasy world of Athia. She must face off against the nefarious Tantas and use her newfound magical powers to find her way home.

Stay tuned for Downtime Bros’ upcoming review of Forspoken.
