The movie adaption of point-and-click survival horror game Five Nights at Freddy’s will be released on 27 October simultaneously on NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service and in theatres. Jason Blum, CEO of Blumhouse, confirmed the news on Twitter saying: “FNAFMovie is coming this Halloween on October 27. 2023!!!!!”

The video game, which quickly gained a cult-following after its initial release in 2014, has spawned several sequels. Since then, talk of a movie has been rampant with Warner Bros originally holding the rights to the cinematic adaption.

Development on the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie has stalled a number of times. At first, Gil Kenan was signed on to direct the film. However, when Blumhouse took over production in 2017, series creator Scott Cawthorn said the project was “back at square one”.

Harry Potter director Chris Columbus was then attached to direct the project before departing in 2021. Finally in October 2022, Blumhouse announced that The Wind director Emma Tammi would helm the movie adaption.

Five Nights at Freddy’s takes place at fictional pizza restaurant “Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza”. Players take control of a night shift employee who must fend off murderous animatronic mascots that come alive. The film will follow the same premise.

A 27 October release means that the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie will release in time for Halloween. In theatres, it will go up against Saw X and an as-yet untitled The Exorcist movie from the rebooted Halloween trilogy director David Gordon Green.

The FNaF movie will star Elizabeth Lail, Josh Hutcherson, Matthew Lillard, Piper Rubio, Kat Conner Sterling, and Mary Stuart Masterson.
