This Final Fantasy XVI guide explains what mastering abilities does.

Final Fantasy XVI follows protagonist Clive Rosfield on a quest for revenge in the world of Valisthea. After his brother Joshua is killed by a mysterious Eikon (magical creatures that inhabit the bodies of human hosts called Dominants), Clive swears to avenge him.

This latest instalment in the long-running RPG series has received praise from critics and fans alike. However, its launch hasn’t been without criticism mostly due to its performance issues.

On his journey, Clive must learn the true nature of the Eikons and his own powers. During the course of the game, he is able to control and use different Eikon abilities. These are powerful elemental manoeuvres that are central to Final Fantasy XVI‘s combat.

Clive can learn new Eikon abilities through the game’s expansive skill tree. While this grows as Clive acquires new Eikon powers, you can use Ability Points (AP) to unlock abilities for the Eikon powers you already have.

AP is earned by battling and levelling up, so acquiring it is relatively passive in Final Fantasy XVI. Once you have some AP to your name, it’s time to spend it on abilities. But you may have noticed that learnt abilities include the option to “Master” them.

But what exactly does mastering abilities do in Final Fantasy XVI?

What does mastering abilities do in Final Fantasy XVI?

This is what mastering abilities does in Final Fantasy XVI:

Mastering an ability enhances its effect and increases its power. For example, the “Downthrust” ability enables you to use the X+Square buttons while in the air to slice down. By mastering this ability, your blade is imbued with fire which increases its potency and range.

You can check what mastering an ability will do by pressing Triangle for more details. The effect of mastering an ability is described under the “Mastery” heading.

It’s worth noting that mastering an ability costs AP. Therefore, you should be selective about which abilities you choose to master as some will be more useful than others.
