Final Fantasy VII Rebirth To Be PS5 Exclusive

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth PS5 exclusive

Fans waited more than twenty years for Final Fantasy VII Remake. The beloved classic made its debut on PS4 in 2020 before arriving on PS5 and PC in 2021. But now Square Enix has confirmed that the second part in the Remake trilogy will not be coming to PS4 at all. Instead Rebirth will be a PS5 exclusive.

At launch, Final Fantasy VII Remake became the fastest selling PS4 exclusive ever. It surpassed even God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man. So, there’s certainly a huge appetite for more FF7. But PS4 users will have to upgrade to Sony’s latest console if they want to play the new game when it comes out in Winter 2023.

Why is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth a PS5 exclusive?

The constraints of the PS4’s hardware capabilities have been well publicised over the last couple of years.

Many PlayStation fans feel that having games on both current and last-gen consoles limits what game developers are able to deliver.

Square Enix, the developers behind Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, apparently feel the same way about the PS4’s hardware limitations.

Anyone lucky enough to have played a PS5 will be familiar with the blisteringly fast load-times that its SSD offers. This, coupled with the console’s increased graphical prowess, are the key reasons behind Square Enix’s decision to make FF7: Rebirth exclusive to PS5.

Producer Yoshinori Kitase explained the decision in a recent interview with Japanese publication Gamer:

“It’s exclusive to PlayStation 5 because of the graphical quality, of course, as well as SSD access speed”

Translation from Gematsu

Kitase elaborated saying that they needed the PS5’s power to fully explore the vast world of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth:

“Since the adventure unfolds in a vast world after the escape from Midgar, loading stress is an extreme bottleneck. We felt we needed the specifications of PlayStation 5 to overcome that and travel the world comfortably.”

Will Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Be On PC?

The other big question coming out of this is whether or not Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be on PC.

At present, Square Enix have only confirmed the game for PlayStation 5. That means Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will not be on PC at launch.

However, all hope is not lost. FF7 Remake started out as a PlayStation exclusive before coming to PC a year and a half later. So, PC-only players could get their hands on Rebirth in 2024/2025.
