This week, we got our first in depth look at some new and impressive Far Cry 6 gameplay. It has been a long time coming, too. Since the game was announced by Ubisoft back in July of 2020, development has been hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic. And then Far Cry 6‘s initial release date in February 2021 was missed. In subsequent months, fans have been eagerly awaiting further gameplay footage to get them excited for the new September release date. Finally, on May 28th, Ubisoft gave us a new Far Cry 6 trailer that showcased tonnes to look forward to.

The game is now coming one week later than expected with a confirmed release date of 7th October 2021. But the new gameplay footage has everyone buzzing. And not just because we got to see Chorizo, an adorable little sausage dog companion that melted the internet’s collective heart. The new gameplay trailers also showed us gorgeous and exciting gun fights, fun and creative weapons and vehicles, more of badass revolutionary protagonist Dani, and another glimpse of the dictator villain Antón Castillo (Giancarlo Esposito).

So, let’s take a look at some of the standout features of Far Cry 6‘s gameplay.

Far Cry 6 Gameplay: Chorizo and Guapo – Amigos

Let’s start with the part everyone cares about. How does Chorizo fit in to Far Cry 6? Well, everyone’s favourite little sausage dog puppy is one of the game’s “Amigos”. Amigos are Far Cry 6‘s fangs for hire i.e. animal companions that help the player in combat and on missions. Alongside Chorizo is the equally lovable Guapo, a denim clad crocodile with a gold tooth.

Joining Chorizo the dachshund puppy and Guapo the crocodile is Champagne. Champagne is a white panther available exclusively to those who purchase the Far Cry 6 Vice Pack. Far Cry 6′s amigos are customisable, too. Ubisoft are even including a “Libertad” outfit for Chorizo as a preorder bonus. Whether that’s something that interests you or not, it should make for a welcome reprieve from the intense political conflict in Yara. But then, who’d complain about a companion wiener dog, anyway?

Far Cry 6 Gameplay: Customisable Makeshift Weapons

The Far Cry series has always been known for its impressive arsenal of weapons and exciting gunplay. Far Cry 6‘s guns look to be all that and more thanks to a new and fitting makeshift approach. Everything in Yara is tightly controlled by the government and “El Presidente” Castillo. And that includes guns. As a result, protagonist Dani Rojas and their band of revolutionaries must build resolver weapons made from whatever they can find. And boy, are the results interesting!

The new trailer shows us the more classic pistols and AK-47 assault rifles alongside some truly jaw-dropping new arrivals. They include the hilarious but deadly CD launcher. We see the player listening to and then firing a Macarena CD at an unsuspecting enemy. It might sound daft, but it’s resourceful – and fun. On top of the CD launcher, Ubisoft also showed us a motorcycle engine minigun and a customised nail gun.

Kudos to Ubisoft for taking this creative route. It means whether you’re interested in customising a classic with a useful suppressor or mortally wounding a man with a spinning CD, there’ll be something in Far Cry 6 for you.

Supremo Backpacks

Something else new to Far Cry 6 are Supremo Backpacks. In the new trailer, we saw Dani wielding one that shot numerous rockets at enemies. While they’re another element of the Far Cry series that may require some suspension of disbelief, they do look pretty exciting. Each backpack offers a unique “supremo” ability that should help in some tricky guerrilla combat situations.

Far Cry 6 Gameplay: Vehicles

Far Cry is renowned for the extensive modes of transportation it offers players to traverse its huge open worlds. As its maps have gotten bigger and more diverse, the need to mixup the vehicular gameplay has only increased. Luckily for us, Far Cry 6 is offering some of the most in-depth vehicle customisation in the series’ history. The new trailer gave an awesome looking (albeit brief) glimpse of what will be possible. From armoured trucks, to sports cars with machine guns, to the classic old fashioned American car (as are common in real life Cuba) with a huge scoop on the front – there’s no shortage of variety. We even saw tanks in the trailer – the possibilities are endless!

Male or Female?

There will be a couple of questions on everyone’s minds after seeing the latest trailer featuring a female protagonist. Can you play as a male protagonist in Far Cry 6? Should you play as a male or female in Far Cry 6? Ultimately, it’s up to you because it essentially makes no difference outside of the gender. Either way, you play as Dani Rojas. And from what we’ve seen, Dani’s gender doesn’t impact the gameplay itself.

Unlike the previous two games, Dani is fully voiced and more heavily involved in the plot from a character perspective. This will be a refreshing change for most players. I know myself that it was one of the key things that prevented me from being fully invested in Far Cry 5. It is odd that Ubisoft hadn’t taken this direction sooner – especially given their success with complex villains like Far Cry 3‘s Vaas Montenegro and Far Cry 5‘s Joseph Seed. But, hey, at least they’ve done it now. And from what we’ve seen thus far, Dani – a born and bred Yaran with a personal grudge against President Castillo – seems pretty great.

What platforms will Far Cry 6 be available on?

Far Cry 6 will be available for PlayStation 4 (PS4), PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Not only that, but it will also be available on cloud gaming services, Amazon Luna and Google Stadia.

After all this promising footage, many gamers will be wanting to know if Far Cry 6 will be available on their console of choice. For me, it seems like the perfect game to enjoy on next-gen hardware. So, Far Cry 6 on PS5 it is for me. But, with so many gamers still on PS4 or Xbox One, Ubisoft are enuring no-one misses out by releasing it for those platforms, too. After all, Far Cry 6 PS4 is still likely to be a top seller.

Whatever platform you decide to go for, Far Cry 6 looks like it could be one of this year’s biggest and wildest games.
