The wait for season 2 of House of the Dragon has been long – but it’s nearly over. On 20 March, HBO released all-new character posters for the upcoming season (which is due to land on Max in June), and eagle eyed fans have spotted a key detail that could foreshadow what is to come.

In total, there are six new posters for House of the Dragon season 2: three for the Blacks (Queen Rhaenyra’s faction), and three for the Greens (King Aegon/Alicent’s crew). Each poster features central characters from the opposing factions. You can check them out below.

The detail that has gotten fans talking can be seen in King Aegon’s poster.

For context, the young monarch ascended the throne after the death of his father, Viserys, at the end of the last season, and was viewed by many as unfit to rule. What’s more, the Blacks believe that Rhaenyra is the true heir to the Iron Throne.

In the poster, we see King Aegon sat on the Iron Throne holding his crown, surrounded by the green banners that represent his side of House Targaryen. However, in a small but crucial detail, one of the banners has been pierced by a sword on the Iron Throne.

Over on Reddit, House of the Dragon fans were keen to discuss the new posters and interesting things they found in them.

“It’s an amazing poster. Love the details like the seven pointed star in Alicents poster, or the dragons in the windows on the left and right… I also noticed one of the swords from the iron throne is piercing the green banner,” said one fan. “Perfect foreshadowing for what’s to come,” another surmised.

So, what’s the big deal with the Iron Throne piercing one of Aegon’s banners? Popular superstition in Westeros holds that the Iron Throne cuts those who are unfit to rule.

In season 1, we saw Viserys I suffer a cut from the throne that was treated by his maesters. Later, Viserys suffered from a form leprosy (as confirmed by actor Paddy Considine in an interview with Entertainment Weekly) which ended up killing him and triggering the succession crisis. Whether the leprosy infection stemmed from the earlier cut is unclear, but it perfectly symbolised Viserys’ ill-fated rule as king of the Seven Kingdoms.

As for Aegon, this cryptic detail is not a good sign for the young king – especially when you consider that his half-sister is already gunning for his seat on the Iron Throne.
