With the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, fan interest in the Italian-American plumber Mario is at an all-time high. One fan has combined the popular character with the Rubik’s Cube – another iconic 80s invention – to create a cool piece of art for other Mario fans to enjoy.

The original incarnation of the world’s most famous video game character appeared in 8-bit form. Back on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), he was made up of “no more than 16 pixels tall and 12 pixels wide”. Each pixel was coloured a red, brown, or peach colour and set the template for Mario’s legendary design.

Conveniently, this design lends itself to being recreated in the form of a Rubik’s Cube. The square stickers on the Cube’s faces mimic the block colours of 8-bit pixels. Get enough Cubes and shift the colours into the correct position, and you can make yourself a pretty cool piece of 8-bit art.

That is exactly what one Reddit user did. Posting to the r/retrogaming subreddit, u/Gwoworgunner wrote: “Made Mario out of rubix [sic] cubes”. They included a picture of their awesome Rubik’s art featuring Mario’s original design, which you can see below.

The artwork was created by using 39 9x9x9 Rubik’s Cubes. The face of each one features a unique combination of colours to bring Mario to life.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie debuted in cinemas on 5 April. As of writing, it has earned $892,106,231 at the worldwide box office. It has also set box office records for being the highest grossing movie based on a video game and the biggest worldwide opening weekend for an animated film.
