Before the awful Fallout 76, there was Fallout 4, Bethesda’s last main line single-player entry in the long-running Fallout series. Fallout 4 was released in 2015 to much anticipation and excitement, and was well received by both fans and critics alike. But it’s been six – yes, six – long years since then, and we have heard very little about a Fallout 4 sequel.
With Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Fallout and Elder Scrolls publisher Bethesda, speculation is running wild about the next Fallout game and the possibility of it being an Xbox exclusive. Either way, it remains incredibly unlikely that Bethesda would not make another Fallout game. Not only to right the wrongs of Fallout 76, but to milk the cash cow that is the beloved Fallout series.
So, what do we know about Fallout 5?
Fallout 5 release date – Has a release date been confirmed?
“When will Fallout 5 come out” is a hot question in the gaming world. As of March 2021, no release date for it has been confirmed.
The game hasn’t been officially announced, so it’s likely to be a while before anything like a release schedule is confirmed. Given the length of time between Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 4, it seems reasonable to speculate that Fallout 5 will release in late 2022 at the earliest. Games take longer to develop now than they did in the past, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only lengthened those development timelines. Of course, there is Elder Scrolls VI, too. And that’s almost certainly going to come before Fallout 5. Yet that doesn’t have a release date either.
Is there a Fallout 5 trailer?
No – No trailer for the game has been released.
If we say a release window of late 2022 at the earliest, an announcement trailer in 2021 isn’t outside the realms of possibility. Even so, we aren’t holding our breath. If you can’t contain your excitement until then, there’s a fair few fan trailers knocking around on YouTube.
Will Fallout 5 be Xbox exclusive?
This hasn’t been confirmed but is looking increasingly likely.
With Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda in 2021, they gained a highly valuable publisher in the gaming industry. It’s no secret that the Xbox Series X, Microsoft’s flagship console, lacks the impressive exclusive games lineup that Sony’s PlayStation 5 boasts. So, it would be surprising if Microsoft didn’t play this to their advantage and ensure Bethesda release both Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls VI as Xbox/PC exclusives. Still, Fallout 5 might come to PlayStation even if it’s at a later date. Expect confirmation around the release of the first trailer.
Fallout 5 location and setting – Where will Fallout 5 be set?
The question of “where is Fallout 5 set” has to be at the top of the list for fans. Again, nothing is confirmed, but we can speculate.
Fallout 3 took place in the US capital of Washington D.C, Fallout: New Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Fallout 4 in Boston and other parts of New England. Where exactly a new Fallout game would take place is still up for debate, but if the past is anything to go by it will be one of the US’s larger cities.
Joshua Duckworth over at GameRant argues in favour of New Orleans. And this setting seems to be a top contender. Still, New York or Chicago in the US, or even foreign cities like London or Tokyo would be amazing to see. I certainly wouldn’t scoff at a “Fallout: London”.
When is Fallout 5 set?

From this, we can reasonably speculate that Fallout 5 will be set even further in the future than Fallout 4 was. Hell, it could even be the first game to take place in the 24th Century.
What will the story of a new Fallout game be?
Nobody knows what Fallout 5 will be about. And it isn’t likely to be closely linked to any past Fallout game, either.
This isn’t unusual for the series. Each game has a self contained story that incorporates elements from the wider world, with only the odd familiar face popping up from one game to the next. But if history is anything to go by, don’t expect to see any of the past player characters – The Vault Dweller, The Chosen One, The Lone Wanderer, The Courier, or The Sole Survivor – in Fallout 5.
