It makes some of us feel old but the fact remains that Fallout 3 came out almost 15 years ago. After all this time, players might think they have seen everything the legendary post-apocalyptic RPG has to offer. Yet, one Fallout 3 player has just had a surprising and rare Enclave encounter even after spending a whopping 600 hours in the game.

Fallout 3 takes place in and around the ruins of Washington D.C. in the year 2277. Two hundred years previously, a nuclear war ravaged the world and left much of it a scarred, irradiated wasteland. You play as The Lone Wanderer, a customisable character who spent the first nineteen years of their life underground in a locked nuclear bunker – Vault 101.

At the start of the game, your father James (voiced by Liam Neeson) mysteriously leaves the vault. In a bid to escape the Vault’s Overseer and to find your father, you leave Vault 101 totally clueless as to the dangers that await outside. Washington D.C. has been obliterated by nuclear war. What remains is in ruins and is populated by struggling humans and mutated monsters.

Posting on Reddit, one Fallout 3 player explained that upon starting a fresh play through of the game they had an encounter that they hadn’t previously experienced in hundreds of hours of total play time. “I just ran into an enclave soldier 10 minutes after leaving vault 101… never in my 600 hours of playing fallout 3 had this ever happened,” they wrote.

The Enclave are one of the many factions that inhabit the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout. They see themselves as the rightful continuation of the pre-war United States government. Operating in isolation from the rest of the world, the Enclave has access to a large arsenal of weaponry and technology. They see themselves as superior to other survivors and operate policies of extermination and slavery.

The Enclave feature heavily in the latter part of Fallout 3‘s story. However, seeing them right at the beginning of the game is rare. Consequently, this particular player asked: “Has this happened to somebody else?”. In the replies, another user explained, “Yes, it’s a thing… If you can kill him, it’s great loot for the start of the game”.

It is cool to see that even after fifteen years Fallout 3 is still surprising players.
