The popularity of Fallout is at an all-time high following the release of the acclaimed TV show on Amazon Prime Video. As a result, fans are clamouring for a brand new Fallout game.

However, it appears a fresh entry in the series is a ways off despite reports that Microsoft want Fallout 5 to be released sooner than later. In the meantime, fans must rely on the Fallout fan community for new content.

Thankfully, a number of comprehensive fan-made games are in development. One of these is a full-blown Fallout 2 remake called Project Arroyo, and its creators are hoping to bring it to Steam.

Project Arroyo is essentially a huge mod built using Fallout 4‘s Creation Engine. More than 100 developers are said to be working on the project at present.

In an interview with The Gamer, project lead Damion Daponte said the Fallout 2 remake is making “fast progress”. Daponte has also started to plan for its release, explaining that he’s looking at “putting it on Steam” in a similar way to Enderal: Forgotten Stories (a successful Skyrim mod that was released via Steam).

His reasoning for this is that Steam is “just a platform that everyone has. It’s easier to access, easier to update, easier to install. It’s just more efficient.” However, the project may be derailed by potential legal complications before it ever gets released.

Daponte explained: “”We would have to figure out all the specificities with [Steam], making it so you require Fallout 2 and Fallout 4 and all of its DLC to get it and make sure there are no legal issues. But we’ll see – we’re still looking into it. I’m personally leaning towards Steam.”

While no timeline for the project’s release has been given, footage and screenshots are available online. This includes a ‘Locations’ trailer and Fallout 2/Project Arroyo comparison video. Fans can also receive updates via the mod’s official X account and subreddit.

If Project Arroyo is eventually released on Steam, there is a possibility it will be available on Steam Deck: “Maybe, we’ll see”, said Daponte.
