Bethesda might be working to speed up the release of future Fallout games, but that doesn’t change the fact we haven’t had a new game in the series since 2015. Thankfully, a remake of the original Fallout game is being developed using Fallout 4‘s engine and a demo is coming this summer.
The first Fallout game came out all the way back in 1997. Consequently, many people have never played it. What’s more, if you were to go back and play it now, you’d find it to be a very different experience to more recent 3D, open-world games in the series.
The new remake, named “Fallout: Vault 13”, aims to change that by shifting the OG game onto Fallout 4‘s engine to make it much more accessible for modern audiences. So far, it looks incredible.
While Fallout: Vault 13 is not an official Bethesda project, it comes from a dedicated team of fans who have been working on the remake for a number of years, creating unique assets and characters in a huge mod-expansion that promises to be the same size as Fallout 4‘s Commonwealth.
In an update from April, the development team explained that the recent Fallout 4 next-gen updated hampered progress but the release of a much-anticipated demo is nearly upon us.
“Our demo is nearly there, and we are at about 90% completion by our estimates! The final touches are being applied as we speak,” wrote culinwino, the Project Co-Lead, on the mod’s official Discord. “While we can’t give an exact release date today, we feel confident enough to say that you‘ll be able to play the demo this summer!”
The team has previously released gameplay footage of the remake in action, including a showcase of Shady Sands, one of the Fallout universe’s most famous locations.
In the video, the Vault Dweller leaves Vault 13 and makes his way to Shady Sands where he encounters some of the towns residents including Seth, Aradesh, and Razlo.
The narrator explains that the remake aims to recreate the deep dialogue system of the original game.
“As you might have just seen, our dialogue system is a little bit different than base Fallout 4. We’ll be using the extended dialogue interface modders resource to restore the classic dialogue system of Fallout 1. And just in case you were wondering, yes, there will be low intelligence dialogue options.”
The 15-minute preview also gives viewers a look at weapons, combat, enemies, and the open-world that the dev team has created for the remake. It’s definitely worth checking out if you want a glimpse of what is to come. We can’t wait.
