Fallout 1 and 2 remakes aren’t happening, says Todd Howard

Todd Howard has explained why Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 will not be remade. The first two games in the post-apocalyptic RPG series were released in 1997 and 1998 respectively and published by Interplay Productions.

Speaking to YouTuber MrMattyPlays, Howard, Bethesda Game Studios’ executive producer, explained that “The main priority for us is to make sure they’re available and you can still play them – so, on the PC, obviously they’re there for people to go and get and play and making sure that they run OK.

As far as beyond that, we’ve talked about it, but our priorities in terms of, hey let’s go do dev work and make certain things work, they haven’t been in those areas. So again, priority is, hey can people load it up and play it? And I do think we want it to load up and run well – the rest of it, I could argue some of the charm of games from that era and the original Fallouts is a little bit of that age.

I would never want to paste over some of that with, well we changed how this works so it’s more modern. So as long as we can download it, as long as it loads up and runs, I think I’d like people to experience it the way it was.”

So, there you have it. A question that has been on the minds of Fallout fans for years has now been put to bed by Todd Howard himself.

Regarding possible ports of the games for modern consoles, Howard said: ““Anything is possible, but that’s going to be a longer dev throw and you have to ask yourself, is that where we want to put our time right now? Or is it best played the way it was on a PC? Right now, if you ask me, the best way to play it is on a PC, mouse and keyboard, the way it was.”

Despite this, fan-made remakes of Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 are in the works. Whether they ever see the light of day remains to be seen, but it’s reassuring to know the Fallout mod community continues to work hard on bringing those titles into the modern era.

After all, Fallout 5 is still a long way off and Todd Howard doesn’t appear to be in any rush to make and release it (which we think is a bad thing for the franchise in the long run). But, whatever the future holds for Fallout, we now know for certain that it won’t involve the series’ classic games.
