How terrifying can an ordinary kitchen utensil really be? Well, pretty damn terrifying, it turns out. Evil Dead Rise, the latest instalment in the long-running horror franchise, features a scene with a cheese grater. And it is leaving viewers questioning whether they’ll ever use one again.

Evil Dead Rise tells the story of two sisters, Beth and Ellie, fighting against demonic creatures who want to kill their family. Being an Evil Dead movie, brutal horror ensues as the demons do whatever they can to terrorise and murder them.

The movie’s shocking trailer gave fans a glimpse of what to expect in the film (which lands in theatres today) including a particularly gruesome scene involving a cheese grater. And now audiences are getting to see the full misapplication of the cheese grate in action, they are leaving cinemas in shock.

Abject brutality is nothing new in the Evil Dead franchise. Nevertheless, the use of a cheese grater – a utensil found in every kitchen – is proving to be a little too close to home for some.

Evil Dead Rise Cheese Grater Scene

I won’t spoil what awaits viewers who dare to go and watch Evil Dead Rise in theatres this weekend. But initial reactions from social media should give audiences a taste of what to expect from director Lee Cronin’s new movie.

Accompanied by a picture of the cheese-shredding, dishwasher safe tool, one Twitter user wrote: “i saw an evil dead rise spoiler with the cheese grater scene IM TRAUMATIZED”. Another said: “I may never emotionally recover from that cheese grater part”.

Of course, all of this is perfect marketing for a horror movie that aims to traumatise audiences. And the Evil Dead Rise promotional team is leaning into it. They are even giving out free mini-graters to some movie-goers. One audience member even got Lee Cronin to autograph his cheese grater (yes, really!).

But where did Lee Cronin – who also wrote Evil Dead Rise – get the inspiration for such a shocking use of an otherwise innocuous household object?

In an interview with Far Out, Cronin explained: “I wrote the film during the first wave of COVID-19 when the entire world was locked in their homes, with an evil force outside the door. We didn’t know what this thing was, so I spent a lot of time just looking at the trappings of everyday life.”

“I just remember thinking I needed some sort of unique weapon in that scene, and I guess I walked into my kitchen and saw the cheese grater and thought, ‘Oh, I have not seen that enough before.'”

So, there you have it. We can thank COVID-19 for the most traumatising scene in recent cinematic history.
