Elden Ring has certainly lived up to the years of anticipation. Praise has been pouring in from across the video game industry. Elden Ring‘s incredible reception has also persuaded lots of gamers to check out the Soulsborne genre for the first time. That means people unfamiliar with FromSoftware games may be wondering how they can take advantage of Elden Ring‘s deep and varied features. However, these games aren’t exactly known for hand-holding. Players have to figure a lot out for themselves. And that includes one of Elden Ring‘s key mechanics – summoning spirits. Spirits come to your aid during battle. But you can’t always count on them. Which is why you’re probably wondering “why can’t I summon?” in Elden Ring? Keep reading to find out why you might not be able to summon spirits…

How to summon Spirits in Elden Ring

It’s important to point out first of all that you can’t just summon spirits from the outset. There is an item that must be acquired. The Spirit Calling Bell. This allows you to use Spirit Ashes to summon spirits. To get the Spirit Calling Bell, visit the Church of Elleh in Limsgrave at night. There you will encounter Renna, who you can talk to and she will give you the Spirit Calling Bell. Be sure to do this after you are able to summon Torrent (the horse/Spectral Steed).

In case you somehow miss this chance to get the Spirit Calling Bell, don’t worry. It is available to purchase from the Twin Maiden Husks in the Roundtable Hold.

Why can’t I summon in Elden Ring?

This leads us onto actually using spirits in Elden Ring. Once you have the Spirit Calling Bell and Spirit Ashes, how do you summon these mystical companions? And why might you be unable to summon when you need to?

Spirits can be summoned when a boss is nearby.

This is why you can’t summon in Elden Ring. You probably aren’t near a Rebirth Monument. You need to be near one in order to summon spirits. The easiest way to identify when a Rebirth Monument is nearby is to look out for the ‘blue door’ icon on the left side of the screen. This means summons are available to use.

So, there you have it. Summoning spirits is pretty straightforward. But it can only be done in certain circumstances – such as when a boss is nearby. Just try and bear that in mind!
