Electronic Arts don’t have the best reputation with video game fans. Despite putting out some classic games over the years, they have disappointed many gamers with their aggressive implementation of microtransactions and loot boxes. In a similar vein, they’ve also been criticised for heavily shifting focus away from traditional single-player games towards multiplayer titles. The reasoning behind that is obvious – the latter are much easier to monetise. And that’s enough to anger gamers all by itself. But now EA have rubbed salt in the wound by dropping a god-awful tweet that insults fans of single-player games. Seriously, who thought this was a good idea?
EA Have Posted A Tweet Insulting Single-Player Fans
In an effort to to capitalise off of the recent “She/He’s a 10 But” meme, EA posted a disastrous tweet that’s angered gamers and industry insiders alike. “They’re a 10 but they only like playing single-player games”, wrote the official EA Twitter account.
For those unfamiliar with the meme, “They’re a 10 but” is always followed by something that’s perceived as negative so as to lower the fictitious person’s score.
As anyone with half a brain would expect, the response has been overwhelmingly negative. Many are pointing out that not only are single-player games still incredibly popular, lots of them also have a higher player count and receive better review scores than EA’s multiplayer offerings.
Popular YouTube personalty YongYea quipped: “Ah yes EA, the foremost expert on 10s”, accompanied by a Metacritic screenshot of poorly received EA multiplayer games.
Why Are People Angry About EA’s Tweet?
High-profile industry veteran Zach Mumbach also responded. He was formerly a producer at Visceral Games, the studio behind single-player masterpiece Dead Space. Mumbach wrote: “This is the company that shut down my studio and laid off ~100 great developers because we were making a single player game”.
Back in 2010, EA said that linear single-player games were ‘finished’. In the decade since, they’ve closed studios and cancelled games in an effort to prioritise multiplayer, live-service offerings.
The timing of this tweet is odd, though, considering that EA recently announced a number of new single-player games. These include a Dead Space remake, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and a new Dragon Age game.
After hours of criticism, EA attempted to course correct with another tweet. However, its insincerity has only made things worse. “Roast well deserved. We’ll take this L cause playing single player games actually makes them an 11,” EA wrote.
