Watch our YouTube video above explaining why Days Gone, released on PS4 in 2019 to poor reception, has to be considered one of the most underrated games ever on PlayStation. Controlling Deacon St John, the player rides a motorcycle (bike) around post-apocalyptic Oregon fighting hordes of zombies. Deacon is a fearless biker with a tattoo or two, and searches tirelessly for his wife Sarah with his friend Boozer.
Bend Studio have done an excellent job creating a terrifying zombie wilderness that is inhabited not only by the undead, but by survivor camps featuring a strong cast of characters. From Iron Mike’s camp Lost Lake to Colonel Garrett’s Deschutes County Militia, Deacon St John meets his fair share of friends and foes in Days Gone. The voice acting and motion capture is commendably strong across the board. The hallmark is Sam Witwer‘s performance as Deacon, making it hard not to get personally invested in his journey to find Sarah.
Perhaps the best feature of Days Gone is the colossal hordes of “freakers” (Days Gone’s name for zombies) that Deacon encounters around Oregon. They are petrifying and contain hundreds of the undead, making them some of the most exhilarating moments in the game. And don’t get me started on the Old Sawmill horde – it is crazy intense. These set pieces alone make Days Gone underrated.
Playing on PS5 in 4K and at 60 frames per second, Days Gone looks stunning, featuring some of the best graphics and visuals to be found anywhere. This makes Photo Mode a real treat. With the release of the PS5, there’s never been a better time to try Days Gone. It just might have you wondering what all the critic negativity was about back in 2019…
