12 months ago, Cyberpunk 2077 on PS Store would’ve been a given. But following its disastrous launch in December last year, it was abruptly pulled from the PlayStation Store by Sony. And after a six month wait, CD Projekt RED’s embattled RPG has finally returned.

CD Projekt RED announced today that the PS4 version of CyberPunk 2077 is once again available for purchase on the PlayStation Store. However they issued a disclaimer with the announcement, stating:

Users may continue to experience some performance issues with the PS4 edition while CD PROJEKT RED further works to improve stability across all platforms. Playing on PS4 Pro and PS5 will provide the best Cyberpunk 2077 experience on PlayStation.

Is Cyberpunk 2077 on PS Store?

Sony issued a similar announcement via Twitter, also confirming its return. They made an even clearer recommendation to play Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 Pro or PS5. They said: “For the best experience on PlayStation, playing on PS4 Pro or PS5 consoles is recommended.”

Cyberpunk 2077 received a large performance update last week in the form of Patch 1.23. The patch promised a long list of fixes, including the following:

  • Numerous crash fixes in animations, UI, scene, physics and gameplay systems.
  • Memory optimizations and memory management improvements in various systems (reducing the number of crashes).
  • Various console CPU optimizations.
  • Memory and I/O improvement leading to fewer instances of NPCs with identical appearances spawning in the same area, and to improved streaming.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll be aware that Cyberpunk 2077 is still struggling with extensive technical issues despite its numerous patches. CD Projekt RED have been working to fix the game (as is evident with Patch 1.23). But many fans feel it’s still far from perfect. And it may be a long time until we see Cyberpunk 2077 in a state everyone is happy with.

What should I buy Cyberpunk 2077 on?

In addition to the confirmation of Cyberpunk 2077‘s re-listing on the PlayStation Store, CDPR also provided a small update regarding its next-gen upgrade:

A free PlayStation 5 upgrade for the game will be coming in the second half of 2021 — and will be available for all owners of the PlayStation 4 version of Cyberpunk 2077, including both digital and disc. The upgrade will allow the title to take full advantage of the new console’s more powerful hardware.

With this in mind, it stands to reason that you should still wait before purchasing the game (if you haven’t already). CDPR and Sony have both acknowledged severe problems. These issues also persist on Xbox One. And while performance is generally better on next-gen hardware via backwards compatibility, the last-gen version remains in relatively bad shape. It seems a far safer bet that significant improvements will be made with the upcoming PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions. So, right now, it makes most sense to go with either the PC version or hold-off for the next-gen upgrades.
