After weeks of rumours and speculation, Treyarch has confirmed that the tragedy of 9/11 will not be featured in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

In May, fans thought they had found a reference to the 2001 terrorist attacks in key art for the upcoming game. “2001” and “/11” could be seen after zooming in on text in the background of the image.

Last week, streamer Elliot Dunn found what he thought was another reference to the attacks inside the submarine off the coast of Rebirth Island. He admitted that it could mean a number of different things.

Now, Treyarch has confirmed to streamer and Call of Duty influencer ModernWarzone that the tragedy will not appear in the game.

“Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 WILL NOT feature the tragedy of 9/11 in any way, shape or form,” ModernWarzone wrote on X.

They then shared a quote from Treyarch addressing the rumours: “We’re [Treyarch] not trying to be provocative just to be provocative, we are inspired by reality but take stuff like this seriously.”

ModernWarzone explained that they asked the question to force Treyarch to confirm or deny the rumours. “I asked a question specifically to be able to shut it down, they didn’t just come out and say it,” they said.

Call of Duty hasn’t shied away from controversy in the past. 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 infamously features a mission, ‘No Russian’, in which the player character enters an airport and mercilessly guns down civilians.

Fans had speculated that a 9/11 mission in Black Ops 6 would be similar to ‘No Russian’. Thankfully, Treyarch has opted not to intentionally generate controversy by using the terror attacks as a backdrop for an in-game mission.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 takes place during the Gulf War of the early 1990s. It is scheduled to release on 25 October 2024.
