Call of Duty has been living in the shadow of the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot over the last two years. But that’s changed with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.
After early access for the game’s campaign, players are now jumping into Modern Warfare 2‘s multiplayer mode. And they’re curious about the new features and changes they’re now seeing for the first time.
And this has left players asking how to unlock weapons in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
The Kastov-74U is based on the real-life AKS-74U which itself is a variant of the AK-74. The Kastov-74U is essentially a hybrid between assault rifle and submachine gun. It is lighter than the Kastov 762 and 545, but still packs a heft punchy for such a light weapon.
With the right attachments and skill, players can make great use of this AK variant. However, the Kastov-74U isn’t available right from the start.
Having said that, players will undoubtedly want to try out all the weapons they possibly can. However, Infinity Ward’s changes to the Gunsmith and weapon progression systems may be confusing at first.
That’s because they’ve changed it to make guns highly customisable and offer you more control over the weapons you build.

How To Unlock Kastov-74U in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Unlocking weapons has changed in Modern Warfare 2.
Weapons are now separated into “Platforms”. Each Platform starts with one gun. When you customise that specific gun in Gunsmith, you will notice a new attachment known as a “Receiver”.
The Receiver essentially acts as the ‘base’ of your weapon build. And this is the key change to weapon unlocks in Modern Warfare II.
When you unlock and change the Receiver, you unlock a new variant of that gun. This new variant will fall into a different category e.g. SMG, Assault Rifle, or Battle Rifle. These new weapon variants can be seen in the Progression tab of the Gunsmith screen.
Unlocking the Kastov-74U involves progressing through the Kastovia platform. The 74U is the third gun you will unlock in the weapon progression tree.
This is how to unlock Kastov-74U in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer: To unlock the Kastov-74U, players must first get to level 23 to unlock the Kastov 762. They must then rank it up to level 10 to unlock the Kastov 545. After obtaining the 545, players must level it up to level 13 to unlock the Kastov-74U.
To check your Rank progress, press the Options/Menu button and select “Progression”. From this screen, you can see which Rank you are, how close you are to the next Rank, and what each new Rank will unlock.
