This guide explains what is FidelityFX CAS in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022).

Call of Duty has been living in the shadow of the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot over the last two years. But that’s all set to change with the upcoming launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. Its campaign is available now while multiplayer will be launching on October 28th. Players are curious about the new features and changes they are now seeing for the first time.

Of course, people are already wondering about the optimum graphics and display set up for Modern Warfare 2. Having a combination of the best visuals and smoothest frame rate is essential for playing at your best.

In the past, this kind of question was limited to PC versions of games only.

On PC, gamers have been used to tweaking and perfecting their graphics settings for decades. It has always been one of the biggest selling points around PC gaming.

With the PS5 and Xbox Series X, console gamers are now getting a degree of graphics customisability, too. Don’t get me wrong – it is nothing like on PC. But it is still an improvement.

Some new graphics options are even being added to new PS4 and Xbox One games.

On console, there is often a couple of different graphics modes as well as some optional graphical effects.

In Modern Warfare 2, players have noticed a setting called “FidelityFX CAS” and they are wondering what it is and what it does.

The technical name has people somewhat confused about exactly what benefit it brings to the game.

So, let’s answer “what is FidelityFX CAS” in Modern Warfare 2

What Is FidelityFX CAS in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022)

Contrast Adaptive Sharpening (or CAS for short) is one of the tools in AMD’s suite of game development tools.

The FidelityFX suite is made up of CAS, Super Resolution, Ambient Occulation, Variable Shading, Screen Space Reflections, Denoiser, Parralel Sort, Downsample, and HDR Mapping.

As a whole, the suite aims to provide “maximum fidelity games” with each tool playing a crucial role.

In Modern Warfare 2 on console, only the Contrast Adaptive Shading element of FidelityFX is toggleable.

So, what is FidelityFX CAS in Modern Warfare 2? FidelityFX CAS is AMD’s Contrast Adaptive Sharpening upscaling technology. It makes the game look sharper and more detailed. AMD says it “helps increase visual quality by enabling sharpening with optional upscaling to restore detail lost after TAA is applied.”

For context, TAA smooths the jagged edges in graphics rendering but can present a less detailed image.

FidelityFX CAS works to create an even amount of sharpening across the screen by adjusting sharpening on a per pixel basis.

For those wondering, FidelityFX CAS should not impact the game’s FPS (frames-per-second).

Ultimately, if you want a clearer and more detailed imagine, consider turning FidelityFX CAS on in Modern Warfare 2‘s settings.
