Call of Duty fans debate the worst game in franchise history

Call of Duty is a franchise that even its most passionate fans can rarely agree on. After twenty main entries in the long-running FPS series, the subject of its best game is a common talking point. But what about the worst Call of Duty game?

A group of CoD fans over on the r/CallOfDuty subreddit have been hotly debating which game in the franchise is the weakest. As many Call of Duty players will be aware, there have been plenty of stinkers.

While games like Call of Duty 4, World at War, Modern Warfare 2 (2009), Black Ops, and Black Ops II are highly regarded, there are just as many that fans would rather forget.

Posting on Reddit, u/jusbrowsinthru wrote “What’s the worst Call of Duty game you’ve ever played?” and explained that their choice is 2021’s Vanguard.

Others were quick to contribute their suggestions for the worst Call of Duty game. Useless_Greg said “MW2 2022. It’s the only cod that has no redeeming qualities in my opinion.” In response, one disgruntled former Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II player added “MW2 was the final nail in the coffin for me. Just a terrible game”.

Vanguard received further criticism from other commenters, with one person going as far as to describe it as having a “terrible campaign” and “unfun multiplayer”. They added “I didn’t even touch the zombies mode once because of how bad it sounded.”

Commenting on Vanguard’s widely-panned Zombies mode, u/Mr_Rafi said “Vanguard zombies is arguably the worst zombies of all time. I think even saying “arguably” is being too nice.” Another user noted that things started out well for Vanguard but it didn’t last: “The beta was fun but it went downhill from there”, they said.

This year’s instalment – Modern Warfare III – didn’t escape without criticism, with u/TricobaltGaming calling its campaign “f***ing atrocious” and the “First game to ever make me genuinely mad at it”.

User TheNullOfTheVoid agreed, calling MW3‘s campaign “way too short, lazily made, boring” and added that it had a “cheap ending that was very undeserved”.

Other dishonourable mentions in the thread are 2017’s WWII, Modern Warfare (2019), and Black Ops III. However, it seems that recent titles Call of Duty: Vanguard and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II are by far the most disliked.

While we didn’t hate either game and enjoyed certain aspects of them, there was certainly a lot that could’ve been done better. For years now it has felt like CoD is going through the motions. And the evident dissatisfaction among some players exemplifies that many believe there is significant room for improvement.
