Activision’s annual Call of Duty games were typically revealed around April or May in years past. But beginning with last year’s Black Ops Cold War, it seems the publisher now prefers to leave it as late as possible. Now we’re into August. And little to nothing has been shared about Call of Duty 2021. Until this week.

CoD 2021 – otherwise known as Call of Duty: WWII Vanguard – has been elusive. There were even rumours that it was a developmental disaster that would disappoint fans. But we finally got our first nuggets of information yesterday. Activision held their Q2 Financial Investor Call and shared some key details – and they sound like they’re happy with how the game’s coming along. So, let’s take a look at what we know so far about Call of Duty 2021 (Call of Duty: Vanguard)…

When will Call of Duty: Vanguard be released?

During Activision’s Q2 earnings call, Activision president Rob Kostich said Call of Duty 2021 is due for release “in the fourth quarter of this year”.

From that statement, we can realistically expect the game to arrive in October, November or December. Based on series trends, it’s unlikely the game will be released in December. However, rumoured development issues could force Activision to buck the trend this year.

Will Call of Duty 2021 be on PS4 and Xbox One?

Call of Duty 2021 will be on both PS4 and Xbox One. Activision president and COO Daniel Alegre stated during the Q2 Financial Investor Call investor call that the company are looking to deliver “a great seamless experience for both current and next-gen console players”.

With next-gen (current-gen?) soon entering its second year, many might expect Call of Duty: WWII Vanguard will forgo a PS4/Xbox One release? But, no. The game will be launching in Q4 2021 on all the usual platforms.

Where can I watch the trailer?

A Call of Duty 2021 trailer hasn’t been released yet. It’s unclear when exactly we can expect it. But Activision president Rob Kostich confirmed the company would be sharing more details about the game “very soon”. It’s safe to assume a trailer will accompany the upcoming information Kostich is referring to.

What game modes will Call of Duty: Vanguard have?

For Call of Duty 2021, players can anticipate the inclusion of campaign, multiplayer, and co-op. Of course, Warzone integration will also play a huge part in the franchise’s next instalment.

I think fans know what to expect when it comes to CoD. Each release is similar, but specific game modes can vary. Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII didn’t have a campaign, for example.

How do we know the aforementioned game modes will be featured? Rob Kostich said during the Q2 earnings call: “across all modes of play, across multiplayer, across campaign and across co-op, development is coming along really well.” He added: “Content wise, it’s a really robust game at launch across all the modes”.

Who is making the next CoD?

We’ve known for a while that Sledgehammer Games are developing Call of Duty: Vanguard. Activision confirmed it a few months ago during their Q1 earnings call. Sledgehammer Games’ last CoD was 2017’s Call of Duty: WWII. It took the franchise back to its 1940s roots for the first time since 2008’s World at War.

How will Warzone integration work?

Warzone integration in Call of Duty 2021 is a bit of an unknown right now. Daniel Alegre confirmed “we are focused on continuing to integrate Warzone and engaging our direct relationship with our player base through even deeper content integration between the premium and free experiences and substantial innovation coming within Warzone itself.” Big promises but little substance at the moment. However, a new WWII-themed map based in the Pacific Theatre of the conflict has been rumoured for a while.
