Bloodborne PS5: 4K 60fps Update, Remake and Everything We Know

Bloodborne is probably one of the best games ever made for the PS4. It was highly regarded by critics for its intense difficulty and excellent world design when it came out in 2015. Coming from developer FromSoftware, Bloodborne drew massive inspiration from their previous Souls games while simultaneously standing alone as a hallmark title on the PlayStation 4. When Demon’s Souls was remade for the PS5 to take advantage of new technology and deliver 4K resolution and 60 frames per second gameplay, many speculated Bloodborne wouldn’t be far behind. And given the excellent quality of the Demon’s Souls remake, a Bloodborne PS5 remake or 4K 60fps upgrade would be outstanding.

Upgrading games made for PS4 is important. While the newer consoles are great, longer development times mean exclusive next-gen games are taking a while to reach gamers. Reliving eighth generation classics on PS5 is a great way of filling the gaps between new releases. And even though many games have received the next-gen upgrade treatment, Bloodborne is yet to be so lucky.

Remakes are also proving to be a popular choice for developers. Why create an entirely new IP when you can simply cash-in on an existing one? Look at The Last of Us. Sony recently confirmed its remake – The Last of Us Part I – for the PS5. And while many may consider it unnecessary, it’ll surely be a commercial hit. Which begs the question: why hasn’t Sony capitalised on Bloodborne‘s sustained popularity? So, how likely are we to receive a Bloodborne 4K 60fps upgrade OR – better yet – a Bloodborne PS5 remake?

Bloodborne

First off – let’s talk about the game itself. If you’ve never played Bloodborne, you’re missing out! Especially if you enjoyed more recent Soulsborne games such as Elden Ring and Demon’s Souls remake. Bloodborne is an RPG that puts players in the shoes of a ‘Hunter’. The Hunter awakens in the dreamlike Gothic city of Yharnam on the night of The Hunt. Yharnam is plagued by a mysterious blood disease and has fallen to ruin. The disease has transformed its inhabitants into aggressive monsters but the source of the condition is unclear. During The Hunt, you must fight your way through Yharnam and face terrifying Lovecraftian-style horrors along the way, including giant, malformed beasts and creepy celestial beings.

Bloodborne was released in March 2015 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive. It was developed by FromSoftware and – as mentioned – is considered part of the wider Soulsborne series. It was a commercial success for publisher Sony and has been called one of the best video games ever made.

Can you play Bloodborne on PS5?

Before we discuss a possible Bloodborne remake or 4K 60fps upgrade, it’s worth answering one simple question. Can you play Bloodborne on PS5? Yes – you can. The PlayStation 5’s backwards compatibility means you can play most PS4 games. This includes Bloodborne. Sony even featured it as part of the PS5-exclusive PlayStation Plus Collection, which consisted of some of the most popular and successful PS4 games.

Is Bloodborne 4K 60fps on PS5?

Thanks to the PS5’s Game Boost feature, you might expect an acclaimed PS4 exclusive title like Bloodborne to run at 60fps on Sony’s latest console. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case. While Bloodborne is backwards compatible and can be played on the PS5, there are no improvements. Just as on the PS4, it is locked at 30fps. Resolution-wise, it only achieves 1080p on the PS5, too. This means that there’s no advantage to playing Bloodborne on PS5.

Some games with unlocked frame rates are able to harness the increased power of the PS5 and automatically run at 60fps. But those with locked frame rates need a significant patch to achieve anything above their limit. Bloodborne falls into this category. So, it would need either a dedicated 4K 60fps patch or a full blown remake. Of course, the former would be a lot more straightforward.

Bloodborne PS5 upgrade

A Bloodborne 4K 60fps upgrade is far from guaranteed. Nothing has been officially announced by Sony or FromSoftware. And with all the fan speculation, you’d think they’d probably have already confirmed an upgrade if one was due for release soon. Still, rumours about a Bloodborne 4K 60fps PS5 upgrade or remaster are rampant. For instance, there have been rumblings that Bluepoint (who were recently acquired by Sony and developed the PS5 remake of Demon’s Souls) are working on numerous Bloodborne-related things. But, as always, it’s just speculation until something is officially confirmed. Even so, fans remain hopeful a Bloodborne PS5 upgrade is on the way. We’ll all just have to keep our fingers crossed.

To summarise, Bloodborne doesn’t run at 60fps on PS5. Like many PS4 titles, it is locked at 30fps. A PS5 upgrade to boost it up to 4K 60fps hasn’t been confirmed and doesn’t have a release date. The lack of any official confirmation on the topic implies that if one is in the works, it’s likely a long way off. Still, those with a craving to revisit Yharnam can do so on PS5. They’ll just have to make do with 1080p and 30fps.

Bloodborne PS5 remake

If a PS5 upgrade for Bloodborne isn’t on the way, perhaps a PS5 remake is? Well, don’t get your hopes up. While rumours of a remake have been floating around for the last couple of years, there has been no official announcement of such a project. As the Demon’s Souls remake proved successful and The Last of Us Part I is due for release in September, a Bloodborne remake could be on the cards. It makes commercial sense. But we won’t know for sure until Sony say something about it. And so far they haven’t said anything about a Bloodborne PS5 remake.

Will there be a Bloodborne 2?

Will there be a Bloodborne 2? We simply don’t know. Despite the original game being a critical and commercial success, a sequel hasn’t been mentioned or confirmed by Sony. There have been a number of recent, unsubstantiated rumours that suggested a second instalment could be on the way, but we haven’t heard anything official and there is no concrete information about it.

Bloodborne 2 release date

When will Bloodborne 2 be released? It doesn’t have a release date and it’s probably many years away. That’s if it ever does get made, of course. We haven’t even seen a logo or teaser trailer, and there’s nothing to suggest it’s in development.

Does Sony own Bloodborne?

Simply put, Sony owns Bloodborne. The trademark belongs to Sony and only they can decide what happens next with the series. Developer FromSoftware will only make a new Bloodborne game, remake, or PS5 upgrade if Sony agrees to it. Here’s hoping that Sony has Bloodborne factored into their future plans.
