The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim may be getting long in the tooth but that hasn’t stopped Bethesda from re-releasing it once again for PS5 and Xbox Series X. Let’s face it, Skyrim receiving the next-gen upgrade treatment isn’t quite as satisfying as getting The Elder Scrolls VI would be. But at least it allows console players to get a taste of TES on modern hardware. Skyrim Special Edition included mods on PS4 and that has carried across into the PS5 upgrade. There are tonnes of mods to choose from but which are the best Skyrim mods to use on PS5 in 2022?

Best Skyrim Mods To Use On PS5

Bethesda games are known for their extensive mod support and huge modding communities. Be it Fallout or Skyrim, the level of sheer creativity and depth of the mod catalogue is breathtaking. In fact, it’s so large, it can be overwhelming when you first look at it. You might expect this would only be the case on PC – but it isn’t. There’s a heck of a lot of mods available to PS4 and PS5 players, too.

So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at the top five best mods for Skyrim on PS5…

1. Epic Enhanced Console Graphics

One of the perpetual problems of playing Skyrim on console is that it never looks as good as it does on PC. Even on PS5, the graphics haven’t really improved. That’s where the Epic Enhanced Console Graphics mod comes in. And it really is one of the best Skyrim mods for PS5.

Before installing the mod, Skyrim looks dated. It’s drab and dull. Nothing pops like it should and the world lacks vibrancy. Once installed, Tamriel comes to life on PS5. The degree of improvement the mod offers is staggering. Thanks to the enhanced lighting effects, graphical color correction, and realistic FX effects, Skyrim on PS5 looks so much closer to a modern game.

The Epic Enhanced Console Graphics V5 mod was built for PS4 but it works perfectly well on PS5. It really is the graphical overhaul the game needed – so make sure it’s at the top of your list.

2. The Great Cities by Soldierofwar

For a game that came out over ten years ago, it’s understandable that some of Skyrim‘s environments don’t quite match up to more recent video game worlds. The Great Cities mod overhauls some of Skyrim’s less inspiring towns and turns them into, well, great cities! The mod “is for anyone that wants to breath new life into or was unsatisfied with the minor cities and towns of Skyrim.”

Uploader DonkyConq has taken Soldierofwar’s original Nexus mods and compiled them for PS4/PS5 players. Towns included in this compilation mod are Dawnstar, Dragon Bridge, Falkreath, Morthal, Rorikstead, and Winterhold.

The aim of The Great Cities mod was to revamp some of the smaller towns “without altering the vanilla feel and gameplay too much.” Not only that, but all the changes are lore friendly – which is great.

3. Immersive Citizens – AI Overhaul

Skyrim‘s NPCs are famously dumb. Don’t get me wrong, Bethesda have created an incredibly immersive world. But sometimes the actions of Skyrim’s citizens are questionable at best. Luckily, creator arnaud.dorchymont has blessed us with their Immersive Citizens mod which completely overhauls the AI of NPCs making them smarter and more realistic. With an aggregate rating of 5 stars from 13707 ratings, this really is one of the best Skyrim mods on PS5.

The whole aim of the mod is to make NPCs “act and react like true humans in relation to their environment or to an aggressor.” This is achieved via a new Survival Instinct feature “that gives them the ability to evaluate danger” and “respond to it more realistically while under attack.”

It’s not just combat behaviour that has been altered, either. The Immersive Citizens mod also adds “new and realistic behaviors including improved schedules, occasional travel, and better use and response to the world around them.” It might be cliché to say, but this mod really is game changing on Skyrim for PS5.

4. Obsidian Weathers

Obsidian Weathers by Arindel adds incredible depth and ambience to Skyrim‘s atmosphere. The changes it brings are pretty extensive and include new weathers, remastered audio and reworked natural lighting. Obsidian Weathers “glorifies Skyrim for her beauty while preserving her dated modesty.”

By utilising approximately 90 weathers, this mod adds true variety to the biomes of the world. Regions now have unique climates “created specifically for the environment and flora”. Overall, the mod uses weather to accentuate the visual appeal of Skyrim and helps bring the world to life like never before. It gives the game a truly next-gen feel that’s just right for PS5.

5. Immersive Movement

Let’s face it, Skyrim‘s movement doesn’t feel the most natural. It’s more like gliding around just above the ground. That’s where the Immersive Movement mod by zanadaniel comes in.

It’s simple but incredibly effective. Immersive Movement makes the game’s pacing more realistic by making your character feel like an actual person with weight and momentum. It’s designed to make Skyrim‘s movement more authentic while slightly increasing the challenge. Once installed, the difference is immediately apparent. For those who favour realistic gameplay, the Immersive Movement mod is a must.

And there you have it, my list of the best Skyrim mods to use on PS5. Of course, there’s many many more I could’ve included. Just remember, whatever you’re wanting to do in Skyrim on PS5, there’s almost certainly a mod for it.
