Baldur’s Gate 3: How to change appearance

This Baldur’s Gate 3 guide explains how to change appearance.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a vast and deep role-playing experience that’s an absolute joy to play once you’ve figured out how everything works. And there is a lot to learn in Baldur’s Gate 3. I found myself repeatedly wondering how to do certain things and what all the different actions do.

When I first started BG3, I spent a lot of time carefully creating my character and fine-tuning his appearance. It’s safe to say I was sweating the details, just like I do in every RPG I play. By the time I was finished, I was totally happy with how my character looked.

However, it wasn’t long before I started wanting to change things. So, I set about trying to figure out how I could change my character’s appearance in Baldur’s Gate 3. Handily, it wasn’t too difficult thanks to a useful feature recently added by Larian Studios.

How to change appearance in Baldur’s Gate 3

I changed my character’s appearance in Baldur’s Gate 3 by using the Magic Mirror.

The Magic Mirror is accessible at camp and allowed me to change the following aspects of my character’s appearance:

  • Identity
  • Voice
  • Face
  • Skin colour
  • Maturity
  • Freckles
  • Vitiligo pigmentation
  • Heterochromia
  • Eyes
  • Tattoos
  • Makeup
  • Lips
  • Hair
  • Genitals

It was added to Baldur’s Gate 3 as part of Patch #3 on 22 September 2023. I was pleased to see its inclusion in the patch as the lack of a way to change my character’s appearance always felt like a glaring omission.

Where to find the Magic Mirror in BG3

To find the Magic Mirror, I crossed a river by walking over a log on the southeast side of the campsite. The Magic Mirror was inside a small, dilapidated stone building.

Its exact location can be seen on the map screenshot I’ve provided below:

Once I found the glowing blue mirror, I approached it and pressed X to use it. A brief cutscene played before the character customisation screen appeared.
