Assassin’s Creed Shadows will finally take the long-running stealth/RPG series to feudal Japan. During Ubisoft Forward, fans were treated to their first real look at the upcoming title’s gameplay. And one particular feature stood out to viewers – the ability to pet Shiba Inu dogs.
In Shadows, players have the choice of controlling two characters. They are Yasuke (an African samurai) and Naoe (a female shinobi). As expected, Shadows’ gameplay is highly reminiscent of recent Assassin’s Creed games (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing).
With that being said, it’s clear that Ubisoft is attempting to enhance immersion now that Assassin’s Creed has officially left last-generation consoles behind. Environments are rich and detailed, and the game’s lighting and shadows look excellent.
Furthermore, crowds of NPCs fill city streets and there is plenty of wildlife for players to encounter. Most notable was the trailer’s Shiba Inu. Yasuke is shown approaching the friendly pup which wags its tail as the samurai reaches out to pet it.
Art Director Thierry Dansereau explained that “The wildlife is now, more than ever, part of the game’s ecosystem and biomes. In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a lot of the game wildlife will evolve and change colours through the seasons.”
He continued: “The player will even see puppies, mostly in the springtime.” COUNT US IN!
Dansereau also explained that their goal “is to have more natural behaviours and awareness systems.” So, players can reasonably expect that they’ll be able to interact with other animals in the world of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
While it is currently unclear how deep the wildlife systems go, we will surely learn more in the run up to the game’s release on 15 November. Interestingly, it will be the first game in the series released on macOS since Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood which launched for OS X in mid-2011.
