It feels like the original Alan Wake came out a lifetime ago. In fact, it was 11 years ago this year that we first journeyed to Bright Falls as the titular struggling novelist. However, now, after years of work, a crossover with Control and a remaster, developer Remedy have finally confirmed Alan Wake 2.
Alan Wake 2 – What We Know
Survival Horror
The Alan Wake sequel is set to take on more of a survival horror vibe than its predecessor. The original game contained horror elements but had a heavy focus on action. Sam Lake, Creative Director at Remedy, explained, “Whereas the first Alan Wake had horror elements in it, it was an action game. Alan Wake 2 is Remedy’s first survival horror game. Our take on the genre.”
The new trailer shown at The Game Awards certainly fits into the survival horror genre. In fact, it was eerily reminiscent of Silent Hill in parts. If the new trailer is anything to go by, fans have an exhilarating horror experience waiting for them in Alan Wake 2.
Alan Wake 2 Story
Remedy are yet to share details of the game’s story; however, they have given fans a hint at what to expect.
Sam Lake wrote, “When we, at the end of the game, left Alan Wake off in the supernatural nightmare dimension of the Dark Place, it felt like a fitting end to our horror story, but also like a cool cliffhanger of things to come.”
From that, we can expect to pick up where the first game concluded with Wake presumably still stranded in the Dark Place. It makes for a fitting setting if the game is indeed headed in the survival horror direction. But, for now, we’ll have to wait and see exactly what Remedy have in store.
Notably, Lake stressed that playing any of Remedy’s previous games is “not required in any way to fully enjoy Alan Wake 2”. That’s good news for newcomers. Although, if you’re interested in checking out the sequel, you might as well play the original.
Alan Wake 2 Release Date
Alan Wake 2 will be released in 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Remedy weren’t more specific, which is unsurprising given the timescale. We’ll probably know for certain (excluding any unforeseen delays) this time next year.
