I think we can all agree that Game of Thrones‘ ending was a disappointment. Thankfully, House of the Dragon is making up for that. It has everything fans could want and episode three was arguably the most exciting yet. But one thing left many viewers puzzled. Who was on the dragon in episode 3 of House of the Dragon?
Before we get into that, it’s important to explain the context of House of the Dragon within the wider Game of Thrones universe.
House of the Dragon takes place almost 200 years before its predecessor. The prequel series follows the heyday of the House Targaryen, back when they ruled Westeros and sat on the Iron Throne.
The House Targaryen is led by patriarch King Viserys I. The series begins with his ascension to the throne before skipping forward nine years into his reign. As the show explains, this is 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen.
Episode 3 – “Second of His Name” – jumps a further three years ahead. By this time, the War for the Stepstones has escalated. Lord Corlys Velaryon and Prince Daemon Targaryen are locked in a fierce conflict with Triarchy lieutenant Craghas Drahar, the Crabfeeder.
They had successfully pushed the Crabfeeder and his soldiers back to the island of Bloodstone. And following an offer of help from King Viserys I, an enraged Daemon rushes to the island alone to put an end to conflict without the assistance of his brother.
Despite sustaining injuries, Daemon is saved by the Velaryon army and a dragon which quickly defeat the Triarchy men. But it isn’t clear who is riding the dragon during the assault on Bloodstone, even though they are briefly shown.

House of the Dragon: Who was on the dragon in episode 3?
The dragon featured at the end of “Second of His Name” is Seasmoke. And the third episode marks its first appearance in House of the Dragon.
Who was on the dragon in episode 3 of House of the Dragon? Laenor Velaryon was on the dragon at the end of episode 3 of House of the Dragon. He rode it during the assault on Bloodstone to save Daemon Targaryen from death at the hands of the Crabfeeder and his Triarchy soldiers. Laenor used Seasmoke to burn the soldiers alive.
Laenor Velaryon is the is the son of Corlys Velaryon and Rhaenys Targaryen. He was previously seen as a young boy in attendance at the Heir’s Tournament during episode 1.
