You might have heard the rumours about Red Dead Redemption and GTA 4 remasters. There has been heavy speculation for months about the games’ development despite little evidence.
However, new claims from a trustworthy Rockstar insider suggest the planned remasters have been scrapped. And the reason behind that decision may be the disastrous launch of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
Rockstar scrap Red Dead Redemption and GTA 4 remasters
As VGC reported, the insider – Twitter user @TezFunz2 – tweeted yesterday that Rockstar was planning the remastered titles. But these plans have now been abandoned according to their source.
“As per a reliable source with clear accuracy on Rockstar plans, remasters of GTA IV & RDR1 were on the table a few years ago, but Rockstar chose not to proceed with the projects in mind.”

@Tez2Funz2 also speculated that Rockstar’s botched release of the remastered GTA trilogy is to blame. “The poor reception of the Trilogy DE might be a reason behind that decision.”
GTA fans will recall how badly that game launched in November last year. Despite promising trailers and lots of hype, the remastered collection was a technical mess. Dodgy character models, awful weather effects, physics issues, and countless other problems plagued the games.
The collection was mercilessly review bombed online. And Rockstar ultimately confessed the games “did not launch in a state that meets our own standards of quality, or the standards our fans have come to expect.” However, it was revealed in February that The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition was still a huge success for Rockstar and may have sold as many as 10 million units.
Will the remasters ever be released?
As of now, it’s unlikely the Red Dead Redemption and GTA 4 remasters will ever see the light of day. Although a report from Kotaku suggests the games aren’t necessarily off the table for good. Rockstar has simply reprioritised and is focusing its efforts on GTA 6.
We know for sure that Grand Theft Auto VI is in development. So, it makes sense that Rockstar is concentrating on its upcoming juggernaut title rather than older games.
This will likely come as good news to many fans. The wait for GTA 6 has been a long one and patience is running out. While a GTA IV remaster would surely be welcome, a brand new instalment will undoubtedly be much preferred.
