This article contains BIG spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home. Don’t say I didn’t warn you! It was the movie event of the year and the excitement surrounding it was palpable. Spider-Man: No Way Home has finally hit theatres and it delivered some incredible moments. We loved it. But for as many questions as there were going in, there are somehow more now we’re on the other side. Some of the biggest questions centre on the film’s many returning stars and surprise cameos. However, one sticks out more than all the others: Will Tobey Maguire return as Spider-Man? After No Way Home, the once seemingly certain answer to that question isn’t quite so clear. So, what do we know and have Marvel and Sony shared any details?

Will Tobey Maguire Return As Spider-Man?

Let’s get this out the way. Nothing has been officially confirmed in regards to Tobey Maguire returning as Spider-Man in a future film, be it a standalone or a crossover. Logically, it seems a lot more likely than it ever did before. And after Maguire’s awesome appearance in No Way Home, fans have been left wanting to know more about what’s happened to his version of the web-slinger (dubbed “Peter-Two” in the movie) in the years since Spider-Man 3. Precious few details were shared in the new film, so there’s scope to fill in the blanks with future standalone movies. And it looks like that might actually happen according to a new leak.

Giant Freakin Robot reports that Spider-Man 4 is in the works following the success of No Way Home. According to that leak from a “trusted and proven” source, the answer to “Will we see Tobey Maguire return as Spider-Man?” is “yes”. At least, that’s what’s being considered by Sony right now.

The report explains that the project is still in the “early stages”. But the working idea is for it to be animated, like Into the Spider-Verse. It’s an odd choice given Maguire’s recent live-action appearance in No Way Home and is a little disappointing. However, we must remember that nothing has been confirmed. There’s still plenty of time for things to change. At least it seems likely that something is on the way.

What Could Spider-Man 4 Be About?

One thing we do know from No Way Home is that Maguire’s Peter has made things work with Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson. That’s a relief given their ups and downs over the years. But we don’t know if they’re married or have children. With Maguire’s version of the wall-crawler being older than both Tom Holland’s and Andrew Garfield’s, there’s an opportunity there to see Spidey as we’ve never seen him before. I for one wouldn’t complain about Spider-Man 4 focusing on the struggles of Maguire’s Peter as he balances fatherhood with vigilantism. It would be a great chance for elaboration on what’s happened since we last saw him. Not only that, but we could see how his tragic and heroic life experiences (including the events of No Way Home) have shaped him.

There are, of course, villains that Maguire’s Spider-Man didn’t face off against in his films. There’s definitely room to fit in some other baddies for him to fight. That being said, we don’t know how the multi-reality travel has effected his universe. Which means some villains who previously died may actually be alive. Whatever the case may be, we’re going to have to wait to find out if the project will actually materialise first.

Is Tobey Macguire’s Spider-Man in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to arrive on 6th May 2022 and it’s directed by Sam Raimi. That’s interesting because Raimi was the director behind the original Spider-Man trilogy – the one starring Tobey Maguire. And, if a recent report is to be believed, Raimi and Maguire will be teaming up again in the Doctor Strange sequel.

FandomWire reported last year that Tobey Maguire will return as Spider-Man in Doctor Strange 2. The upcoming movie follows the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home in which the concept of the multiverse was blown right open. In typical Marvel fashion, we don’t know tonnes about Doctor Strange 2‘s plot – but we do know that it focuses on the multiverse. That will provide the perfect opportunity for the return of Maguire’s “Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”.

For those wondering if FandomWire’s report can be trusted, they broke the story that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would be returning in Spider-Man: No Way Home. That means they have a pretty damn good track record.
