On 1st December, Sony confirmed that Godfall: Challenger Edition would be one of December’s free PlayStation Plus titles. However, a leak revealed the news earlier and we shared the details of the games here on the website and our Instagram page back on 25th November.

Since the PS5 launched, there’s been ongoing conversation around the value subscribers are getting with the free monthly PS Plus titles. When we polled our Instagram followers for a “Thumbs Up” or “Thumbs Down” on December’s selection, 64% responded with the positive option. The result was somewhat unsurprising given that Godfall was a PS5 launch game. However, there was some confusion about the new subtitle: “Challenger Edition”. Now, Sony have clarified what exactly the Challenger Edition is. And let’s just say that it would probably change the results of our poll.

So, what is Godfall: Challenger Edition?

What is Godfall: Challenger Edition?

Godfall: Challenger Edition is a massively stripped back version of the full game. It consists of three different endgame modes and lacks the story campaign of the full game. It is not an enhanced and/or expanded version of the game.

The three modes available in Challenger Edition are: Lightbringer, Dreamstones, and the Ascended Tower of Trials. PlayStation Blog explains, “All three are endgame-level content, but you’ll be immediately equipped with a spread of deadly weapons and skill points, letting you team up with up to two other players in co-op.”

People who enjoy the Challenger Edition will have the option of upgrading to the Deluxe Edition. This upgrade comes at a cost and will give access to the story campaign and the Fire & Darkness campaigns. So, basically, what you’re getting is a marketing ploy badged as a free game included in your monthly subscription.

As someone who has been a PlayStation Plus subscriber since the beginning, it’s really disappointing to see Sony go down this road. This content isn’t free. Users pay for it with their subscription. And as we’re paying for it, we should be getting value for money – not misleading sales tactics from publishers. Godfall: Challenger Edition is a huge red flag for the state of PlayStation Plus offerings going forward.

How much is the Godfall: Challenger Edition upgrade?

As mentioned, players who enjoy the stripped back Challenger Edition of Godfall can pay to upgrade to the full game. The upgrade looks to cost $45 and will give players access to Godfall: Deluxe Edition.

However, I’d imagine it’s pretty unlikely many will want to do that. Judging by the game’s lacklustre scores on Metacritic (61 from critics and 4.6 from users), the original full game was no must-play title.

Godfall: Challenger Edition will be available to download free for PlayStation Plus subscribers from 7th December. Be sure to check back here for a review!
